In De Wildeman, Amsterdam
I've put this in 'nightlife', but it's also open in the afternoon. This is a great bar serving over 200 types of beer. It's not overly lively (there is no music), and we noticed that many people like to sit with a good book and relax with their beer. The staff are very helpful and will help you choose a beer if you aren't sure what you are looking for - and each one is served in its own special glass. We particularly enjoyed Leffe Blond beer, but also have a special fondness for one called Delerium Tremens. We had to try a beet with a name like that, and I was delighted that the bottle was decorated with little pink elephants!
Dress Code: Casual.
If beer is your thing and you want a proper drinking establishment then this where to be. In de Wildeman is described as a "Bier Proeflokaal" - literally "beer tasting place" - and that is exactly what it is. There's no music, the food offering is limited to snacky stuff and so there are no distractions from the serious business of quaffing an international selection of beers.
There are usually 18 tap beers on offer, mainly Dutch and Belgian, changing seasonally, with each served in its appropriate drinking vessel, and another 180 or so in bottles. The bar has two rooms, one used to be non-smoking, but now both are (spit!) and there is a pleasant beer-fuelled bonhomie about the ambience.
I've notice that some other sites' reviewers knock the service here but this isn't a tourist destination and if you're expecting fawning service don't bother - this is a pub!
Clientelle tend towards the older age group and is mostly local, I suppose the lack of Eurofizz and Musak deters the youngsters, but is eclectic and even if dropping in for a sole session you'll usually find a conversation. On my last visit I even ended up being photographed by a local mag as an archetypal beer hound!
Yep good bar!
In de Wildeman certainly justifies its label as a bierproeflokal (beer tasting house) with its choice of 200 bottled beers and another 18 or so on tap.
The staff are very knowledgeable so if you are not sure which of the 200 plus varieties to try they can offer help.
It’s a popular place – not only because of the beer but the atmosphere, which is relaxed and amiable as any good pub/bar should be! – so getting a seat may be tricky but if you enjoy a good glass of beer in a convivial atmosphere I would certainly recommend visiting.
There is also a non-smoking room in the back.
It is worth visiting their informative website (www.indewildeman.nl) to find out about sepcial events, featured beers etc..
Open: Mon-Thurs. 12pm-1am
Fri and Sat : 12pm-2am
Closed on Sunday
The biggest beer selection in the city and a cool cafe to boot. Eighteen interesting drafts and 200 different bottels. Sorry, no Heineken! :-) Friendly locals and beer geeks alike.
Dress Code: After enough of these beers, I imagine clothes are optional.
