    Erotic Museum: Red-Light District

    by shiran_d Written Feb 8, 2003

Tell people you're going to Amsterdam and there's a fair chance they'll wink knowingly or give you a sly nod. After all, this is the infamous sin city of Europe, the Disneyland of hashish and hookers, right? Fair enough. Still, beneath Amsterdam's racy reputation is a cosmopolitan city that's a capital of commerce and good times of all sorts.

Did you think you could visit Amsterdam and not find a repository of all things sex related? Housed in a wonderful 18th-century building in the Red-Light District, this saucy space exhibits erotic art and devices from different cultures and historical periods. Visitors under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian

    Dress Code: As you wish,

You can't get away from the nightlife here. The Redlight District was interesting. As a female I had no problems walking around at night. There were lots of police walking around. I have heard some stories about people going a bit crazy after a bit of 'partying', but I hit none of this out-of-hand stuff. Everyone seamed really quite mellow...HHmmmmm..

    The other side of Amsterdam...

The other side of Amsterdam comes alive at night. The lights from the bars, restaurants and shops twinkle and reflect off of the water. There are lots of people bar hopping, sitting in cafes (smoking pot, of course). Everywhere you turn, there are crowds of people. The lines to get into restaurants or to get french fries are looooooong. I couldn't visit Amsterdam without touring the Red Light District. It was not what I expected. Instead of finding one long boulevard bathed in a scarlet glow, lined with beautiful women tempting men with sex, I found that there are several areas. However, the women were not beautiful (not usually). The women were most often wearing lingerie while sitting on a barstool behind a plate glass picture window. Occasionally, she would be young and sexy, but the norm was a woman in her late 20s to early 30s and a little chubby. These women all shared the same look of boredom. I think that I would have to be a man to understand the attraction of having sex behind a curtain with a woman who was indifferent.
Don't be surprised if you come up on someone urinating in the street (hence the overwhelming odor in the streets). Amsterdam is a crazy town. People get loaded with booze and pot. You'll have a great time no matter what. The people watching aspect alone makes the trip worthwhile.

Red Light District: Red Light District

I never did get to go at night because I was only in Amsterdam for 1 day but I am told that when all the windows are full of girls and the red lights are on, the whole street is a spectacular sight. I personally wouldn't go there alone and without a group of people with me because I have been told that the area is kinda seedy, but I'm sure for a bunch of guys it would be fun.

    Well, nightlife in Amsterdam...

Well, nightlife in Amsterdam for male tourists often means the Red Lights District, whose real name is New Market.
No pics here for obvious reasons.

The main road is along a canal, and 'ladies' show themselves in 'swimsuit' standing at the street level behind glass doors.
Behind the girls you can see a tiny apartment with a small bedroom and a bathroom.
'Customers' enter there, a curtain falls down to protect privacy.
The most difficult thing should be EXITING that doors, I have seen people running out there hiding themselves behind coats. What a bleakness...

There are also 'showrooms' available, where other 'ladies' perform their shows. I admit, I saw a show, and that's is funny because it is absolutely ridiculous. Don't ask me for details, please.

It has been also funny to see almost all the people that I met at the RIPE offices in the morning wandering around with a strange lights in their eyes.

This is going to sound really naughty, but one of my only positive experiences in Amsterdam was when I hooked up with some locals who took me to all the underground live sex shows. This wasn't your standard tourist acts, or even anything suited for the porn channels. I will just let you imagination wander on that one.

If your into this, even not, its definately something you should see in your lifetime.

Every one talks about the Red Light district in Amsterdam. Well me too. It is also an interesting area to stroll down. It does sit along a canal. I will not get into the merits of this place. Just suffice it to say you will see some unique people and things here.

I like spending the evening in one of the many 'Brown Cafes' located all over the city. Try a jenever or some of the finestest beers in the world

I found it a bit scary maybe because I was female but it's something that can't be missed. The dirty shops have bizarre things and the women and the 'women'in the windows are quite strange maybe because I live in a quite conservative place in comparison.

Apart from the usual Red light district, you can go to the nightclubs at Amstel, most of these are good.
