The Red Light District: Nearly everyone tourist visits here

by kenbac Updated Sep 26, 2003

The Red Light District is possibly the best known area in Amsterdam. Nealrly everyone who visits Amsterdam wants to see this area. I beleive Amsterdamer's sometimes are a little put out by this, as they consider there are many more interesting places to see. They're probably right. However it remains one of the most frequebnted areas in Amsterdam. Of course, not everybody who goes there indulges in the obvious commodity. Curiosity has a lot to do with it as well.
I find the area interesting and full of life.

Dress Code: Dress Code. That's a difficult one to answer.

I found it a bit scary maybe because I was female but it's something that can't be missed. The dirty shops have bizarre things and the women and the 'women'in the windows are quite strange maybe because I live in a quite conservative place in comparison.

Well, nightlife in Amsterdam for male tourists often means the Red Lights District, whose real name is New Market.
No pics here for obvious reasons.

The main road is along a canal, and 'ladies' show themselves in 'swimsuit' standing at the street level behind glass doors.
Behind the girls you can see a tiny apartment with a small bedroom and a bathroom.
'Customers' enter there, a curtain falls down to protect privacy.
The most difficult thing should be EXITING that doors, I have seen people running out there hiding themselves behind coats. What a bleakness...

There are also 'showrooms' available, where other 'ladies' perform their shows. I admit, I saw a show, and that's is funny because it is absolutely ridiculous. Don't ask me for details, please.

It has been also funny to see almost all the people that I met at the RIPE offices in the morning wandering around with a strange lights in their eyes.

    Coffeeshops: Ricks Cafe

    by PeteP51D Written Dec 2, 2004

Ricks has always been my oasis in the Red Light District. Full bar (unusual for a coffeeshop)on ground floor, pool table in the loft upstairs, cool train seat booths up back , good, tastey music 90% of the time.

Red Light District: A big tourist attraction!

    by MM212 Updated Jan 22, 2015

With prostitution legal in Amsterdam, the city has a thriving red light district where the lights are red! Although normally one would avoid such neighbourhoods, in Amsterdam it has become a big tourist attraction - not prostitution, but rather the neighbourhood itself - where men and women walk around to see this unusual area and look at windows as they would in a shopping centre. The reason is that scantily clad women stand in these windows to try to attract customers, which is a rather unique approach to this trade. When I walked through the neighbourhood on the evening of 1st Jan 2015, there were so many people walking the streets that it didn't at all feel unsafe or uncomfortable. I also did not see a single person walk in or out of the shops (maybe I wasn't watching carefully), but most people were just window shopping. I must say, I was sad for these women in the windows, but I don't judge...

    Erotic Museum: Red-Light District

    by shiran_d Written Feb 8, 2003

Tell people you're going to Amsterdam and there's a fair chance they'll wink knowingly or give you a sly nod. After all, this is the infamous sin city of Europe, the Disneyland of hashish and hookers, right? Fair enough. Still, beneath Amsterdam's racy reputation is a cosmopolitan city that's a capital of commerce and good times of all sorts.

Did you think you could visit Amsterdam and not find a repository of all things sex related? Housed in a wonderful 18th-century building in the Red-Light District, this saucy space exhibits erotic art and devices from different cultures and historical periods. Visitors under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian

Apart from the usual Red light district, you can go to the nightclubs at Amstel, most of these are good.
