The Bulldog Coffeeshop: The former Police Station #14

The Bulldog is one of the well-known Amsterdam coffeshops. The smoking area is in the basement, where the original police prison cells are still in use by the customers.

The Bulldog has a merchandise shop and pool and bar section too.

Remember, there's no alcohol served in the smoking section.

Dress Code: Just come as you are.

Coffeeshops: The Bulldog Mack coffee shop and bar

I came to this cafe/bar purely for one reason. To have a smoke. No, not cigarette smoking, but to relax and puff on some marijuana joint. I haven't had marijuana for many many years, and since I was in Amsterdam, well, I time to try some!

I approached the bar and asked for some marijuana (the lady behind the bar was very helpful and knew how to speak English), and I insisted I got some of the weaker stuff as I am not used to marijuana. She gave me a very well packaged joint for Euro 3.50. I also bought a pint of some local beer.

I relaxed by the window on the cold winter's night, started smoking away, sipping on the beer, and after having 3/4 of the joint, I was in a nice state of mind and very relaxed. I could not finish off the entire joint!

Later, I went for a walk around, looking at the beautiful ladies in the windows, seeing a peep show for fun and had another beer. It was a nice, peaceful evening. ;)

Dress Code: I wore jeans, a jumper and jacket. I gather you have to wear jeans at the very least if you're a guy, and a for females, whatever you are comfortable with depending on the weather.

Open 10:00am until 1:00am and on weekends it closes at 2:00am.

    Bulldog (Leidseplein): Reliable but non-local

Bulldog is a chain of bars and coffeeshop in Amsterdam. They have quite a few of branches on busy spots throughout the city.
Being a very 'tourist-friendly establishment the Bulldog is immensely popular especially among British tourists.
Their 'flagship' branch at the Leidseplein consist both of a coffeshop (basement) and a bar (ground and second floor). It is an 'ok' place to drink a pint, watch a football game, but you will not be able to experience what a 'local' Amsterdam bar feels like. My advice is, go elsewhere if this is your first trip to Amsterdam :)

1 of 2, either the Grasshopper, or the Bulldog
check out the lower floors, these are your real 'coffee shops', be careful cos in the Grasshopper you aren't allowed to drink alcohol on the lower floor. At the Bulldog you can obtain 'special' coffee, 'special' milkshakes and spacecakes...when in Rome do as the Romans's even fun just to watch your mates.

The Bulldog - Coffeeshop: Looking for latenight fun??

by hasthetravelbug Written Jul 15, 2004

I'm not sure if the Bulldog is a popular coffeeshop with the locals but it definately accomodates for the travellers... There are at least two and you never have to run around looking for a your favourite place. It isn't my favourite coffeeshop but it is one that is easy to find and conveniently located. Have fun!

    Bulldog: New Year

by VickiJ Written Aug 25, 2004

This is an awesome place to come for New Year. Ensure you have a ticket to get in (cost about 25 Euros!) and queue a little early to make sure you get a good spot!
Chilled music and a great atmosphere!!
The waiters serve to the table so you need never get up (unless to go to the toilets!!)
Def recommend going outside on the strike of midnight to see all the crazy fireworks!!

Dress Code: Anything goes! (Dress up warm if going outside at midnight - it aint hot!)
