This might not sound exciting but it really is something worth seeing, whether your a Flower lover or not. Tours do go here, or you can get there on your own steam like I did. I caught Bus 172 from outside Central Station. It took about an hour to get there, and stops right at the Complex. This is the WORLD'S LARGEST FLOWER AUCTION, so as you can imagine, its extremely busy. You walk on a high boardwalk overlooking all the Flowers and action. You can peer through the window at the Auction room and see the buyers in Action, how fast each lot is sold, its amazing! I saw Flowers that I hadn't seen before. There is a souvenir shop and a Cafe for that morning cuppa & cake(quite expensive) Take your time and enjoy.
Open on WEEKDAYS ONLY from 7.30am - 11am.
Admission 5 euro (2009)
Every day from early am to about 2pm Monday to Friday, about 45 mins through the traffic by bus, out on the outskirts is the horticultural growing area of Aalsmeer where also you will find the enormous complex that is the worlds largest flower auctions involving about 60,000 transactions daily are held supplying markets all over Europe and the world.
The 171 bus, and the 172 bus returning, leave about half hourly through the day from Centraal Station with another notable landmark stop along the way being out at Leidesplein.
Dont worry about not knowing where to get off - you cant miss the huge symbol of the flower auctions out at the complex and the bus drivers have always been extremely helpful as to where to go off.
This is a well worth morning spent seeing all sorts of beautiful flowers but it is earlier the better but dont worry too much about if you have a copy of the Lonely Planet guide that says you must be out there really early and that it packs up by 10am - the woman greeting on arrival was adamant that there is activity to watch until mid afternoon.
Tickets were about 7 euro to get in. There is a shop with a wide range of souvenir for sales and a well stocked coffee shop.
Aalsmeer (very close to Amsterdam) Flower Market it's the biggest flower market in the world. Every day auctions take place in there, flowers are bought and then distributed worldwide.
And if you want you get to see the process!
You can see how the flowers are stored and the site where auction takes place. The center is massive and the sooner you get there (7am) more flowers you’ll see.
It’s an unusual thing to see but totally worth it. And probably there is no other place you can experience something like this but in Holland.
The auction is open to the public from Monday to Friday between 7 and 11 am. The auction is closed to the public at Saturdays, Sundays and official bank holidays.
Adults € 5.00
Children (6 to 11 years) € 3.00
