    For java junkies

Miscellaneous: Especially for Americans who drink more than their fair share of coffee, I would suggest packing some.

While the coffee served here is wonderful, it's sold by the cup (no free refills). When you figure any where from 1.50 to 2.50 euro a cup then figure the current dollar/euro exchange rate, that darn expensive!

Of course you can buy coffee at the local grocery stores, however the odds are you have some spare space in the suitcase, why not use it. The space it takes on the way over, can be used for what you buy here.

Also would suggest bring instant or coffee bags, since most hotels have tea kettles rather than the mini Mr. Coffee.

Also if you like to travel with a cup, I would suggest bringing your own travel mug. In six months I haven't seen a styrofoam cup yet. The few places that do sell coffee to go, serve in paper or worse yet thin plastic.

Luggage and bags: no need to bring your own pipe, plus the airport security may not like that..i would reccomend bringing a pack of zig zags for that feel good american style joint..

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: otherwise the prerolled cones are quite amazing and most shops have bongs or free papers..

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: pokers are also provided by the shops.

Photo Equipment: ask before snapping photo's of yourself toking a bowl, or of your nice stash..most allow it some won't!

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: never camp at a coffeeshop, this is not the grand canyon you cannot stay all night, drink your drink smoke your spliff or whatever, relax for a bit..but never set up camp, this is not cool behavior!

Where to get your laundry done.

by ATLC Written Apr 29, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Miscellaneous: Dutch people do their own laundry. I've not seen a household where there is no washing machine. So laundromats are few and far between. However, if you do need to have your laundry done, I found this info right here on VT by using the search box and the words 'laundry amsterdam':

    http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-192857-1-1-Travel-0-463377-Amsterdam-discussion.html

    and

    http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-524054-1-1-Travel-0-463377-Amsterdam-discussion.html

    Here's a list of other dry-cleaning/laundry services
    :
    http://www.detelefoongids.nl/bg/plaats-amsterdam/w-wasserij/1/

Under the map on the right you see a link 'vergroot de kaart'. Click on that and you get the same list with a map of Amsterdam.

The central area is just under the letters 'erd' of AmstERDam.

Miscellaneous: There is absolutely nothing you can´t buy when you are in Amsterdam. So no worries, if you forgot something simple buy it! Amsterdam likes to make money.

Amsterdam has this toilets they call a ´curl´ after its form. So if you are male and have to go simply walk into the curl, its free! No money making here....

    Packing List

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Miscellaneous: Actually, there are a few things easily available in A'dam that you definitely should not pack.
Whether it's some truly disgusting pornography or a little something from one of the coffeeshops, my advice to you is don't bring it home, especially if home is the USA.Why ruin what was, more than likely, a very enjoyable stay in A'dam. Not to mention the fact that this kind of behaviour makes it harder for the Netherlands to maintain its enlightened attitude concerning victimless crimes.

    Bring this address: Internet Centre

by steedappeal Written Nov 13, 2011

Miscellaneous: There used to be an Easyinternet place nearby but that has closed. I really had to struggle to find an Internet Centre near the Centraal Station. Here is a good one: City Phone Internet,
Nieuwendijk 126. 2 Euros for 30 minutes. Lots of tiny steps to descend into the basement but very convenient. Open 7 days 9 until 10 pm.

Luggage and bags: Make sure not to have too many lighters in one luggage or bag, if you are a collector like myself, they can be confiscated as a fire hazard.

Amsterdam What to Pack

pieter_jan_v's Profile Photo
Just bring your every day clothes and some good walking shoes. Yes, it can rain at times, but you will be dry in a museum or bar. Better leave some room to pack your souvenirs on the way back.
