The Café and Bar Americain is part of the American Hotel, a well-known landmark at the Leidseplein.
Nowadays the hotel in art-deco style is part of the Eden group.
The café and the terras stayed a popular location to watch it all, as at the neighbouring Leidseplein the action never stops.
We stopped here to relax after hours of wandering for coffee and a few small plates. The cheese platter was excellant. The service was great especaiily considering the size of the venue. We were a bit resilant to stop in since we were abroad .....we didn't want to visit a place called "Cafe Americain" ....but were delighted we had decided to make the stop
Cafe American in Leidseplein. The food is okay, but its the atmosphere and general ambience of the place that made this restaurant special for me.

They serve Indonesian style meals here. Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands, and Amsterdam has its fair share of Indonesian migrants.
