My favorite thing about this restaurant, is without question, the canal side terrace.
My second favorite thing is the beer. Try the locally brewed Columbus. It will knock your socks of and is a delicious beer.
My third favorite thing, is the hapjes (bites). Order a snack plate with olives, cheeses, and bread, then take a sip of beer. Watch the boats go by... enjoy your day. :) It is wonderful.
Favorite Dish: If you want to hang out on the patio or with the chic people in the bar, you can order a wide variety of sandwiches and soups. I have had very good luck with soup at this restaurant.
If you are interested in eating as well ;) the restaurant upstairs is quite good. De Jaren does not have an extensive menu, but overall the quality is quite good. The pasta of the day is usually quite respectable.
If you desire to relax and read a paper, sit on the terrace and overlook the Amstel, or meet someone to begin a lovely night on the town, you can certainly be satisfied here. The ‘Borrel hapjes’ or snacks that accompany your drink come at a slightly higher price, as well as the international choices served for dinner. The Muntplein and Rembrandtplein are just on the other side of the river. The Waterlooplein is a few minutes from the side and the Dam Square is right up the road. You can enjoy your food and the traffic of Amstel river as well.
Favorite Dish: tomato soup and broodjes
De Jaren is a very popular meetingplace in the heart of Amsterdam but also a very good place to eat!
Very large and spacious restaurant with very nice terrace overlooking the Amstel.
Eventhough this is a popular place, the prices are not very high.
Favorite Dish: There is something for everybody, also vegetarian.
Very good fish dishes.
Unfortunately I don't remember the name of big café (if anyone knows ....). I really enjoy its cool atmosphere and the fantastic view on the canal through the huge window.
