Pleasant roomy and clean..completely refurbished about 6 years ago. Very open plan and you can see the chef at work in the open kitchen. Staff can be a little changable, Ive never seen the same waiter twice! The meat is always good but I made a mistake once and ordered the lobster tail, which was dry and cardboardy !! Open for 12 noon til late.Prices are average for this type of Steakhouse, but beware if ordering a specific steak as these do not come with anything. The fries , sauce, salad, bread etc are all charged extra. Toilets are down stairs but nice and clean. The wine, mainly from Argentine and Chile, is very resonably priced for this type of establisment.
Favorite Dish: Fillet steak 350 grams, Baked Spud with herb butter and a green salad.Their Rib-Eye is also good.Bottle of Flishers Shirah !

Reading the tips about the Gauchos Restaurants i was surprised that nobody did mention the best out of the five Gauchos restaurants in town. The place to be is the one at Spuistraat nmbr 3, also entrance at Nieuwezijdsvoorburgwal nmbr 24. This is one of the Gauchos restaurants were they know what service is ! The staff is well trained end the kitchenstaff knows what they are doing !The staff will show you all the different kinds of steaks on a big plate and explain what is what, so you know what you order !
The steaks are fresh from Argentina, never been frozen and you can taste the difference !
Also if you like fish or are a vegetarian the menu will please you !
Favorite Dish: There a several kind of steaks, if i want red meat i take the Bife de Lomo, realy soft and tender. If i want a steak a litlle bit more well done i take the Beef Ancho (Rib eye steak).
But the staff will ,help you to make the perfect choise, my friend asked for the Lomo well done, staff did advice him to try it medium or even better medium rare, i did try medium rare because the staff did tell him it was no problem to put it back on the grill a litle bit longer after being served. But i was surprised >>>>> he did like it verry much medium rare for the fisrt time in is live !!

This restaurant is based on Argentinian meat, but it's expensive for what is offered. The meat is small and the price of the side plates is appart, turning the meal expensive.
The service is also very bad. There are few waiters and it's difficult to get the attention of one of thems, so the service is very slow.
Although the food is not bad, I don't reccomend this restaurant for it's price and service. Amsterdam has other better alternatives with better price.

If you are looking for good meat, an Argentine restaurant will always be a good bet. We were wandering around in Amsterdam one day and felt like having a nice steak, so we decided to try this one as there were 3 argentine restaurants on the street and this one had the most people (the prices were the same in all 3).
It has a very modern and, in my opinion, stylish decor, which is a nice chance from the typical wooden benches covered in cow-skin you always get at the Argentine restaurant (nothing wrong with that, in any case). We were told to wait to be seated by a somewhat unfriendly waiter. We then got a table in the middle of the room, which I was not too happy about, but was not in a mood to insist, so we took it anyway.
We then proceeded to order a steak each (Bife de Chorizo and Bife Ancho) and they were both great. According to the menu, the meat is aged and turned only once when it is cooked, giving it its great taste.
Now the complains. One thing that I absolutely hate is when you have to pay extra for fries or salad, but this is the case here. The meat is already quite expensive and you have to pay for the chips too... on top of that, they are the deep-frozen kind and they taste awful (think McDonald's fries). It really does not go well with the meat. There was also another kind of chips (with the peel), but I can't remember the name. I would try those instead.
If you want sauce (I don't recommend it), it is also extra.
I was not happy at all with the service, the waiters were always rushing and were not friendly at all.
At the end, I paid with credit card and the waiter brought me the machine to read the cards, entered the amount and asked me if I "wanted to leav anything for the staff", so you should (if you want to of course) enter the amount of the tip at this time. Not very nice!
Although the meat was good, I would probably not go there again, mainly because of the service, which is not adequate for the price you pay.

It's full or Argentinian restaurants!
BTW: there're quite expensive as well, but nice food!
American theme: it's SOUTH American... but I know a lot of people wrongly think: "American" means JUST from North America (and there is also Central America! woow!!)
Favorite Dish: Asado!

There are several Argentinian restaurant in Amsterdam. I went to two and found Gauchos served delicious steak and pork ribs. Dun mistake Gauchos with Ranchos - also an Argentinian restaurant chain.
There are a few Gauchos around Amsterdam. Decorations and service varies.
Favorite Dish: Grilled pork ribs. For 14 Euros (in Dec 2002), you get free flow of pork ribs, but price does not include any salad or side dishes. Salad and side dishes cost about 4 Euros on average. The pork ribs is superb. At the branch in Damstraat, the waiter will be very prompt to ask you the second or third slab of ribs, but not anymore after the third slab. At the branch in Rembrantplein, service is minimum, prehaps not enough "manpower" there.
