In de Waag was once a city gate and is now a lovely candle lit restaurant. At night hundereds of candles are lit.

The interior is beautiful with incredibly high ceilings, stone walls and floors, and gigantic candelabras. (If you are with a group of more than 8 you can actually reserve one of the turrets for your supper).

The outside patio is also wonderful on sunny afternoon. They make very very yummy sandwiches :)

Favorite Dish: The catch of the day!! This restaurant really knows how to prepare fresh fish. Very very delicious.

Favorite Dish: Great sandwiches!

This building dates from the late 15th century and quite obviously formed one of the city's ancient fortifications. Turns out that it once served as one of the gates to the city walls which are long gone. The conical towers and archer slits give prove its antiquity and authenticity as well as the doors and windows. The restaurant opens at 10 am and is reputed to serve some of the best dishes in the city, but these are toward the upper end of the price range. The unfortunate fact about In De Waag is its position. Just outside the restaurant is the large "I Amsterdam" sign whereon countless tourists take their photographs and just to the west one block away is the fringe of the redlight district. I seldom saw persons entering to dine but I frequently saw the inflow of tourists and locals around its perimeter, barely noticing the old fortification in their rambles.

Cafe in de Waag is located perfectly in Amsterdam, just behind a tourist destination: the I Amsterdam sign! :) Close to Dam Square, the cafe has an outdoor terrace for customers to enjoy their food and drink while partaking in the Dutch pasttime of people watching. :)

My sister and I chose a table on the terrace and were approached by the waiter to take our drink orders then our meal orders. My sister ordered the sandwich of the day, which was a Ham sandwich on ciabatta, with fries (served with mayo) which tasted great! The mayonnaise tastes sweeter here than in the United States. I ordered the Tuna sandwich with the soup of the day, Potatoe and Leek.

When ordering water though, we weren't specific enough in saying that our water was to be Still TAP water so we ended up paying 4.50 euros for two bottled still waters. In any case, the meal was great so we didn't mind paying a little extra.

After finishing our meal, we waited ~10 minutes or so for the waiter to return for the check. We spent about 12 euros each on the meal but weren't hungry again for hours. :)

The Waag (scale) is probably the most beautiful building from the middle ages in the city.
In the old days it was a part of a gate and as the name suggests it used to house a scale.

The restaurant itself is cozy and as you can imagine the interior inside the building from 1488 is beautiful.

We came here with a large group so probably that was part of the reason why the experience wasn't good. The food was blend and cold; overall really nothing good to write about.

So maybe it's better just to come and look at the building without having to have dinner :)

The ambiance here is delightful!

Candleabras with real candles, high ceilings and stone floors and walls!

Candles, low lighting and wood lend a calm and romantic feel to the place.

The restaurant itself is located in a fabulous 15th century monument, and is preserved well.

Favorite Dish: Te menu is not that varied to be honest, but what is on offer should suit a variety of palates.

We were satisified! :)

The dishes that they serve are excellent too.

It's open from 10.00am untill about midnight.

They have a nice lunch menu too it seems, although we never ate lunch there.

For dinner though? Highly recommended! :)
