Lunch Cafe Nielsen: Au Naturel in Amsterdam

by Rixie Updated Jan 21, 2006

We found a cute little natural foods cafe on Berenstraat, one of the short streets linking the canals. Lunchcafe Nielsen was a great find! I had a tasty cheese, tomato, cucumber, and avocado sandwich, made with ciabatta bread that was straight out of the oven.

Our young waitress told us that her boyfriend was from Rotterdam and reminded us that, had Rotterdam not been devastated by bombing in World War II, it would have looked exactly like Amsterdam today. So we had historical facts for lunch, as well.

An architectural sidebar: VT member pieter_jan_v told me that Dutch row houses are so narrow because in the old days, property taxes were figured by the width of your house. Mrs. PJ pointed out the clever use of space in these narrow old buildings -- most have a small loft area like the one where we dined at Cafe Nielsen.

    Lunchcafe Nielsen: Good Appeltaart!

On the look for something hot to drink we stopped by Lunchcafe Nielsen. The interieur is very lovely and the seat next to the window offers you a nice view on the people passing by.

Favorite Dish: The Appeltaart (Apple Pie) was excellent!
