The atmosphere of this place is not outstanding, but it is very pleasant and comfortable.
We sampled several Indian Restaurants during our trip, and kept returning to The Madras, just because the food was so good!
I'd personally recommend their Seekh Kabab, the Jalphrazie, and I'd also urge you to order from memory and not necessarily what is on the menu. For example, we didn't see 'Gosht Boti Kabab Masala' on the menu, but we ordered it anyway, and it was a mindblower.
Most of all, I enjoyed the fact that the dishes were spiced nice and hot without having to ask for it - In the US, it takes 4-5 visits to any given Indian restaurant to convince them that you really do want to eat a nice hot curry, and these folks only asked once: "So, you like hot food?" and from there it was a spice Nirvana for us.
Other Indian restaurants in Amsterdam either made the food too mild, or required prompting to cook it _way too hot_. The Madras was a pleasure.
Favorite Dish: I enjoyed their Murgh tikka quite a lot.
