If you want to sample some local fare, Oud Holland is the place to go. The address is Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 105 in the centre of town, left hand side of the street when walking east.
The service is friendly and efficient, the food gorgeous and the prices reasonable. Meal for two with a bottle of wine, a main course and a sweet is about 50 Euro.
Handy tip: go early or book a table, we went at 8 o'clock Friday night and got the last one. The Dutch eat a bit earlier than say southern Europeans so get ready to eat about 6-6.30. At the weekend it's advisable to book as it gets very busy.
Don't get scared if something brushes by your feet: it's the resident cat!

Small cozy place at just 100 meters from the Royal Palace (Dam square).
This restaurant is one of the few serving real Dutch food.
Try the Mixed Dutch special if you want to try the Capucijners (beans).

Nice Olde World Dutch decor, altough the tables can be a little close together. Beware of the tiny toilet, the door opens inward onto the wash basin , and if you are more than a 40 inch waist , breating in is esential ! Service was very good and English and German was spoken by the waiter. There is a glass enclosed terrace which can be a little chilly in the winter but it provides the best views. Open 12 to 2200 hrs
Favorite Dish: I tried the herring on toast , then Vispotje ( an open baked big dish of Cod , Plaice , Musscles and prawns with crunchy potatoes and herbs in a cheesey butter sauce ). This comes with a large dish of Red Cabbage and green beans, plus another dish of salad with sliced boiled egg. Just the job for a chilly January day ! Euro 22 the lot!

In a great location near the center of the city, Oud Holland is in a building erected in 1649, and serves authentic Dutch style foods. Inside the restaurant is wonderful, as they have kept much of the original woodwork, which makes for a great ambience.
Favorite Dish: The daily specials are excellent!

Tastefully decorative Dutch restaurant that caters to large groups.
I wasn't in a large group, in fact, I was all alone.
This restaurant was my first experience at European dining where I was offered seating with complete strangers who were also dining alone.
For an American, this could be a bit of a shock, but I am more than happy to tell you we 'american's' should adopt this civility.
It was so much fun dining with other tourists from all over the world--each with their own tales to tell--that I sat for nearly five hours listening to each. Understanding each other was at times a challenge, but that made it even more rewarding.
The restaurant itself was a charm, and it's menu is varied. I did not get experimental here, which I now regret, but selected the old standby beef option. I was not disappointed in the least.
If you've heard that Dutch cuisine is bland or not palatable in any way, ignore thee dreadful sinner....I savored truly exceptional Dutch cuisine throughout Amsterdam for an entire week and long for my next visit.
By the way......Anyone know what those deep fried, fast-food style egg-roll-like meat treats are called? If you're a tourist you've gotta try 'em....they are fantastic!
Favorite Dish: Reservations advisable, unless you're alone, then just step in and enjoy...
