rijstaffel at Sama Sebo

Sama Sebo is perhaps the best known Indonesian "rijstaffel" or rice table restaurant in Amsterdam. There are fancier, but this is a good place to go for a delicious and pleasant experience.

The pictures are of two visits to Sama Sebo and include the wide variety of items served in this specialty. It's a great meal to share with folks. Just order a couple of rijstaffels and add a few special dishes and you are on your way.

Favorite Dish: If it's shrimp I'm there, but I also enjoy the Nasi Goreng a lot.

I went here for a friends 40th birthday. There were eight of us in the group and so we had the "RIJSTAFEL" (litterally: Rice-table). This was excellent. The food just kept on coming.

I'll be going back to this place.

I was here in April 2008, and I'm pleased to report all of the prior reviews are accurate. I can only add a few additional details:

The restaurant is located very near the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museums. Its not very fancy looking from the exterior, and is easy to miss - even the sign is tiny and nondescript. Sebo looks more like a Dutch brown cafe than one of the best Indonesian spots in the city (and it is!!). Service is quite good and welcoming, and you feel like a local, not a tourist. If you're into trendy restaurants, don't be put off by the pub-like interior. As everyone has mentioned, the "rice table" is the route to go - all tastes will find several things to enjoy in the nearly 15 small-plates.

Sama Sebo: Classical Indonesian Restaurant in the City Centre

Located in a charming building on the corner of PC Hooftstraat & Hobbemastraat "Sama Sebo" is one of the older Indonesian restaurant offering the famous Indonesian "Rijsttaffel" (rice dish spread).

Like most restaurants in the city center it is rather small but very cozy - reservation is advised for dinner hour and weekends. Service is wonderful, unlike the other 'normal' restaurants in Amsterdam this one actually has an 'American-like' ratio of waiters to tables.

The food is very good; not 100% authentic Indonesian but spicy and savoury enough for me to come here when I missed food from Indonesia.

Favorite Dish: Go for the Rijsttafel - you will get about 8 small plates of entrees, 8 small plates of appetizers and salad and a plate of rice for each person. It will cost you around Euro 25 - 30 (depending on whether you opt for the extra jumbo prawn sate) but well worth the money.

Beer Mat from Sama Sebo

There are many Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam, but Samo Sebo is highly recommended by the locals. Rijsttafel literally translates in English to rice table. A rice table consists of 15-20 Indonesian dishes with rice and various condiments. It's fun to share with a group of 4-6 people. This restaurant is small but cozy, and the food was delicious! Reservations are recommended. The website is available in both Dutch and English.

Favorite Dish: We had the rijsttafel, and while I don't remember much about the individual items we were served, it was all very good.

20 course dinner!

We were treated royally at this restaurant, a block from the Rijksmuseum and near our hotel. The waiter sensed our unfamiliarity with the rice table technique and showed us how the dinner was to be eaten. There was enough food for an army but somehow we managed to finish it all. Book a table as Sama Sebo is very popular and always filled at lunch or dinner.
