We chose Smits Koffiehuis as the location for our Sunday lunch VT meeting. It was built in the early 20th century and is a popular meeting point for both locals and travellers.
The interior has a capacity of more than 150 seatings, which is also the size of the a large oudoor terrace on the Open Havenfront.
We were a VT group of 7 members and easily found a table somewhere in the back of the restaurant. The menu offers some snacks like sandwiches, pancakes and soups as well as a limited selection of lunch and main dishes.
I ordered a Heineken beer (3,15 Euro) and a Hamburger with french fries (12,85 Euro). My meal was just mediocre, but still okay. Service was friendly and attentive.
For using the toilet 0,50 Euro have to be paid, but you will get an appropriate coupon for the restaurant which you can either use for your bill or exchange back to money at one of the waitresses. This is due to the toilet also being used by customers of the Tourist Information Office in the same building.

Smits Koffiehuis: Smits Koffiehuis - traditional café
The Smits Koffiehuis is a good place for a quick bite or a VT meeting as it is quite large. In the warm season you may sit on their terrace facing the canal.
The menu comes in Dutch, English, German and French and features meals, snacks, pancakes etc.
The café is quite cosy and pleasant. When we visited on a Sunday from 1 pm we sat in the back part which wasn't crowded (October 2012).
Please note that the toilet costs Euro 0,50 and make sure you get the 50 cents voucher when you pay the fee as you can use this voucher towards your final bill. So therefore make sure you visit the bathroom before paying.
Favorite Dish: I opted for the Saté Chicken with French Fries at Euro 12.85 and a tea. I got 2 scewers with soft chicken pieces plastered in sate sauce, fries and a bit of salady stuff. I liked it but there was too much sauce for my taste and it was just what I needed on a cold day for lunch.
Smits koffiehuis: Overlook a canal
It was a lovely warm day so we chose to eat here outside on a balcony overlooking a canal it was very pleasent & from time to time the canal buses stop here so great viewing platform to tourist watch.
It is by the station so nice & convenient for a bite before heading off to Schiphol. Be warned though the service was very slow.
I had to double check my bill & found I had been charged for a extra beer although there was no problem sorting this out even though the girl had finished her shift
Favorite Dish: I had a uitsmijter ham & kaas for Euro 5, this is a traditional dutch dish of white bread with melted cheese over ham & 2 fried eggs on top.
My friend has a green salad with smoked chicken, pinenuts & bacon Euro 6
Smits Koffiehuis: NZH recollections
Smits Koffiehuis opened in 1919 as a place were many vistors from the Province of Noord Holland got together at the start of their journey with the NZH steam tram to the North.
Through the years the Koffiehuis stayed popular due to its location opposite the Central Station. The wooding building survived two wars and the growth of the Amsterdam public transport, including the underground metro.
Due to its location, a front room is used by the local tourist service (VVV) for last minute hotel bookings.
The main room is downstairs with a nice terrace along the water.
Favorite Dish: Apple pie with nuts.

Smits koffiehuis: great as a meeting point
Smits koffiehuis, also known as the Noord Zuid Hollands Koffiehuis, is conviently located across the central station. Therefor it is a great meeting point. we met here for the VTmeeting in march 2004.
Smits Koffiehuis is in business since 1919. It was the start and end point of the steamtram between Amsterdam and the north of the province. The steamtram is long gone and when the city was building a metro system they wanted to tear down the koffiehuis. The population of Amsterdam protested, and they had some succes. The koffiehuis was broken down, but the parts were stored to rebuilt it in the future. But when the metro station was ready the government changed its mind and didn't want to rebuilt. The population was furious and after a lot of protest it was finally rebuilt at its original place.
