Go to Van Dobben and eat where the people from Amsterdam eat their sandwiches.
Their Van Dobben Croquet Sandwich (Broodje Kroket) is very famous and the best in my opinion.
But also their other sandwiches are a good opportunity to enjoy Dutch Lunch or just as a snack.

For a breakfast and a lunch find Eetsalon Van Dobben!!! This place already exists for 55 years, and still is a pleasant spot to visit. Especially when hungry you can get here the famous "croquette" for about 2.50 Euro, a home-made meat-thing and just like its "bitterballetjes" delicious. The place got well-known because all is fresh-served !!!
Favorite Dish:
Ehm... my special broodje is broodje half-om, which is a bread roll with chopped raw beef, and a boiled egg, with unions... and an ordinary broodje kroket, the very real croquet with a bread roll ...oow, mjammie!!!
For a quick taste of the old fashioned Amsterdammer snacks and sandwiches, this place is terrific!
It is run by a couple of large mustachioed gay men in white coats.
It is your basic 40s style lunch counter. The place is sparkling clean and has an almost surreal 'back to the future' feel about it.
Favorite Dish:
Since I am an avid carnivore, I particularly enjoy the Filet American. I have never seen this in America, so the name is a bit misleading. It consists of a sort of sublimely spiced raw steak tartare on a bun...mmmm...I would eat this for lunch ALOT. Of course, for Americans, serving size is a bit small. The sandwich is served on a little bread plate.
I learned alot about portion control in this country.
