“The neighborhood of such a city as Amsterdam must supply opportunities for the vices which will spring up in any soil.”
    — from an August 1815 entry to “Diary, Reminiscences, and Correspondence” 1869 by Henry Crabb Robinson (1775-1867, English diarist)

The only vice at Vleminckx Sausmeesters could be gluttony because it has been serving up friettents since 1887; and since 1958 the current location has been home to the best fries in town.

There is always a wait at Vleminckx, a cash-only operation. Do not let that deter you; for the best large, mouthwatering, golden brown crispy fries in Amsterdam are found here. Without indoor space, nor outdoor seats, locals and visitors alike line up for the sauce masters’ friettents. You must eat standing up or find a seat on a nearby stoop.

The offerings for saus are mayonnaise, curry, and ketchup; and a popular one with the Dutch is sate, peanut sauce.

The friettents, costing roughly two euros, are served in a cone-shaped, paper container. After filling the cone with fries, it is placed in a holder on the counter. Take care when lifting it out of the holder; I spilled my cone full of fries, because the tip of the cone clipped the edge of the holder. The men behind the counter supplied a freshly filled cone without question.

Operating hours at Vleminckx Sausmeesters are Monday to Saturday, 11:00 to 18:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 17:30.

Favorite Dish: They make and sell only friettents.

Vleminckx Sausmeesters: Best Doubled fries in the city!

Although they were invented by the Belgians and got their name
from the French, the Dutch stake their claim to fries as well. Fries
are sold all over Amsterdam. One can actually get them on virtually
any block within the city center. However, for those of
discriminating taste that are on a mission for the best, Vleminckx
Sausmeesters will be the place with the fries for you. You'll notice it
once you turn off of Amsterdam's busy Kalverstraat shopping
street. There will be a lengthy line and a bunch of people standing
around speechless, focused on eating fries. The whole operation
from washing and peeling to double-frying is all done in-house for
all to witness. Be sure to treat yourself to one of their plethora of
sauces they have available for €0,30 extra. Be like the locals and
    get them doused in mayonnaise.

Favorite Dish: Buy your heineken beers before you go :P

Vleminckx is an off the counter French Fries selling location.

Basicly it's a small street window with the best French (well Belgian) Fries since 1958.

I remember the place from winter swims at the pool at the Heiligeweg (now Kalvertoren Shopping Center).

    Favorite Dish: Patat met.
