The HEMA is a Dutch departments store with a very typical Dutch appearance and contents.

You'll find HEMA stores in any Dutch town and they offer a range of products you need for everyday life. From clothing to food and drinks.

They offer basic quality, just above the average level and the friendly service is great.

    Best Shopping Areas

by sinjabc Updated Mar 3, 2011

The best shopping areas are north (Nieuwendijk) and south (Kalverstr) of the Dam Square. Along these streets, there are clothing shops, shoe shops, cafes and souvenir shops. Some of my favourites were Hema, H&M, V&D, C&A, and Only.

Leidsestraat east is also a good street for shopping.

The Magna Plaza behind the Royal Palace (Dam Square) has 40 upmarket fashion, gift and jewelry shops.

The 9 Straatjes (Negen Straatjes) in the Western Canal are also popular for boutiques and vintage (Episode) shops. These shops are located from west to east in the lower Western Canal.

    HEMA

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A much loved, Dutch institution, (there was even an exhibition of the history of the company in the Beurs van Berlage Museum in 2002). Some things are as stylish as those in the Conran/Habitat shops but they are as inexpensive as anything found in Woolworth's. Hema's kitchenware is particularly good, with simple crockery and glassware always available. Prices are low, but the quality is usually high: good buys include casual clothes, baby clothing, bed linen, underwear, household items, stationery and other accessories. They have seasonal offers, from garden furniture in summer to chocolate alphabets in November. Hema also sells pastries, bread, and a few delicatessen foods such as smoked eels and cheap wines. None of the shops take credit cards
