Shopping isn't high on my gotta-do list when we travel but markets can be fun when you run into them. We stumbled across two on our rambles about Amsterdam and killed an amusing hour or two drifting along the stalls and doing some people watching.

Bloemenmarkt's anchored barges are a floating flower market of sorts with a liberal amount of dime-a-dozen tourist tchotchkes thrown in for good measure. Bulbs, seeds and cut flowers are the hot items but do be aware of your country's import laws before handing over your euros; bulbs/seeds destined for the United States must be packaged with a specific sticker/certificate (info here) to get them through customs and even then random, cranky officials may confiscate your goodies.

The market operates from Monday through Saturday 09.00-5:30 and on Sunday 11.00 to 5:30. Find it on the Singel canal between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein.

Waterloopleinmarkt is a motley hodgepodge of new and used, trash and treasure, funky-fab to fumigate-it-first. Love flea markets? This is your happy place. Most of the stuff is absolute crap but some of the furbelows on display are a real hoot. It's also busy and a good place to grip your wallet before someone else does.

The market is near the town square and Waterlooplein transit stop: not far from the Rembrandt House Museum. Open Monday to Saturday 09:00 - 17:00. http://www.waterloopleinmarkt.nl/

    Street Market: Knickknacks

Standing at the Square.. with no money to buy

Leidensplein ( Light square ) has quite a handful knickknack sellers. Looks great but I am not sure if they were worth buying.. But then again from the looks of it, I think it would have been cheaper than other places with some bargaining.

The Bos en Lommer street market is held at the Bos en Lommerplein formerly known as the Gulden Winckelplantsoen. The new square is a bit elevated to street level; the basement of the square is a parking garage.

The street market is held Tuesdays through Saturdays 9AM - 6PM and has 120 stalls.

At Sundays there are occasional special markets like the fabric market.

    What to pay: Low prices
