Artis Zoo with a few Heinekens
The lines weren't long so why not. It turns out this zoo is pretty damn good. And the in-house cafe sells Heinekens for what I'd call "reasonable." On a beautiful day, cehcking this place out while picking up a few beers at each of the cafes along the path made for a fun time.
I usually don`t like zoos and I never visit them, so I entered Artis just because I had to attend a wedding party in the building that gives free way to the zoo gardens. Not that I enjoy the visit in particular, but it looks like a clean and well made place to bring kids.
Time to relax
It is nice Zoo, but not SO impressive. We were there when temperature were too low and many animals were off-shown, but nevertheless - some of them (elephants, monkeys etc.) were in special warm indoors. I am sure thet in summer it much better.
Oceanarium is fantastic!!! I did enjoy it!
Easy to get from Central Station.
Nice shop with souvenirs.
Entrance is too expensive - 18,5 euro per person.

Animals of Amsterdam
While not the most impressive zoo I have ever visited, Artis zoo is large and has a good variety of animals. A large aquarium and a planetarium add to the experience, as does a very impressive Butterfly house.
Many of the animals cages seemed a little small to me, especially the big cats (they seemed to do nothing put pace back and forth). As with most zoos there has been no attempt whatsoever to plan a route through it so you can see everything so keep the map handy or you will get lost amongst the maze of avenues between the enclosures.
During the summer the zoo stays open until sunset but be aware that the shop, restaurants and other attractions such as the planetarium/aquarium do not, they will close at six sharp. We combined this trip with the Troppenmuseum only 5 minutes walk away.
Artis, the Zoo
Artis, the zoo. I visited with colleagues on 13 June, 2013. We saw both the library and the animals. It was not my first visit to this well-known zoo, I'd been here before, at a time when I was just a toddler. The library is generally not open to the public, but colleagues made an appointment for this visit since we are all librarians.
There are two things that set Artist apart from the other zoo's I've been around the world:
1. Unlike most other zoo's it is actually located very close to the city center; so it's more like 1/2 a day trip rather than a whole day
2. It actually has a decent collection of aquariums and a planetarium within the same complex
Also, it has partnerships with other zoo's around Europe, so if you have not been in a while and go back there you will see new animals. On a warm and sunny day go there early, as you can sit on the open grass and have a picnic too.
It costs Eur 17.5 for adults and Eur 14 for children.
This is a small zoo in Amsterdam. I didn't really like it as the animals are in small enclosures (unlike other Dutch zoo's), but apperently they're working on building larger enclosures with less animals. The entrance fee is 17.50 euros.

It had a very good selection of animals. My favorite was probably the polar bears and pelicans. I believe the hippo could use a bigger cage though. He looked confined to a really small area. Anyway, check it out. It breaks up the monotony of coffeeshop crawling and boozing.
