I spent a couple of hours (and 16E on a ticket!!) at the zoo in Amsterdam. Zoos are not my favourite places and this one is no better than any others. it was a Saturday and it was packed with families mostly.
The enclosures were too small for such large animals, elephants, zebras, camels, lions tigers etc and I think Amsterdam has plenty enough other attractions to offer tourists and visitors without the need for a zoo. Children will get a better education about wildlife from watching the Discovery Channel.
These places are relics of a bygone past - before people became more aware of animal cruelty and environmental issues and I really can't see the need for them in a modern city. Unless there is a breeding programme for endangered species going on (which some larger zoos specialise in) then I think these places are unnecessary in the 21st century.
It was too expensive and too busy and too small.
Artis Zoo is one of the must see activities in Amsterdam because it's one of the nicest Zoo in the world. Artis is the oldest zoo in Holland, it has 14 hectares and provides home for around 700 species of animals (amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammans and insects).
The Zoo is a heaven of course for any child, but adults are also to learn and enjoy seeing the animals there. I personally enjoyed Amsterdam's Zoo very much.
In addition to the Zoo, Artis is also Amsterdam's oldest city park, featuring a botanical garden (De Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam) (see the next tips).
Opening times: daily from 9am to 5pm
Entrance fee in 2004: 14,5 EUR (adults), 13,5 EUR (65+), 11,0 EUR (3-9).
Included with the Artis Zoo ticket you get the visit to the Aquarium. In the far corner of the Artis park, the Aquarius waits quieltly for the visitors. The Aquarium is smartly built on below ground levels, featuring water canals between which you enter and see the underwater life.
Must see! The fish is colourfull and you might discover species you did not see before.
For more pictures of the fish in the Aquarium and other animals in Artis Zoo see my Artis Travelogue.

2nd oldest zoo in europe
Take a visit to the Artis zoo and you will not be dissapointed, although I personally thought it was on the expensive side at 16 euros for antone over the age of 10 years and still 12.50 euros for under 10 it cost us over 60Euros for 2 adults & 2 children! the maps they give you could be improved on too as very little is marked out on it however there are plenty of species there some we havent saw in other zoo's and there are a couple of interactive things for the kids such as the insectarium. The animals housing conditions are reasonable but could be improved on .
I did not visit the zoo as in my opinion it is fairly expensive, the area is fairly small & my dutch friend suggests visiting the zoo in Rotterdam which offers a safari park like experience. The entrance includes an hourly show at the planetarium, also entry to Aquarium, Zoological & Geological Museum
Opening 9am – 5pm & 6pm in summer
As at 2009 Adult Euro 18.50 & Child 3-9yrs Euro 15 English guide Euro 2.50
Trams 8. 10 & 14 from centraal station
There is a lot being said by this urangatang to me in the photo, although maybe its because I was in Amsterdam at the time!!!, but the expression on his face is just something. When I photoed this guy, I promised him that I'd have him seen, (although I was glad to be at the other side of the glass to him!! I think that his puffy face signifies that he is an Alpha male, this can be dangerous in monkey land)
However ..... I did have that imaginery chat/promise with him.....and so ..... here he is :o)
How do doing guy???

Naturis Artis Magistra, Amsterdams´zoo dates back from 1838 when some people wanted a zoo accesible for all people and not just a private affair for the rich as was done a few years earlier in London.
It quickly growed to the size it now has, a surpringly large garden within the city. My two favorite things from this zoo are the polar bears and the Aquarium. The Aquarium is houses in a wonderfull Neo-classical building and is recently been restored. There where a few huge tanks added with eco-systems from around the globe like a mangrove wood and an Amsterdam Canal!
The polar bears are not here any more. There are now macaws housed in where once the polar bears lived.
In recent years the zoo has undergone some major renovation works. At the moment they are building a new area for the jaguars. And there are plans for a new elephant terrain on what is now the parking lot. The parking lot will go underground and the elephants will be housed on top.
Already finished are the new cages for the birds, the new ape and bird house. The zebra and giraffe plain and butterfly pavilion.

A Nice Way To Spend An Afternoon
Artis Zoo is the oldest in the Netherlands, founded in 1838, and still has a traditional feel. There's a wide variety of creatures, who all seem contented, and paths take you around the enclosures, through pretty and well maintained gardens.
It's a very peaceful environment and a visit is a nice way to spend a few hours away from the city's hustle and bustle.
The Planetarium is located within the Artis Royal Zoo grounds. Its quite big and very modern and has several different shows throughout the day usually starting every half hour. The show we saw was on Astronauts and how they learn and train to adapt to life in space, its all very spectacular and informative.Entry is free as it comes under your Zoo entrance ticket.
