by joecooper Het Rijksmuseum Houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands. The museum has an internationally renowned collection based around the paintings of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, the Golden Age, including twenty works by Rembrandt, four by Vermeer and numerous other paintings by artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. Displayed at the very heart of the museum is Rembrandt’s Night Watch. But the museum houses more than just paintings: there are superb collections of silver, delftware, doll’s houses, prints, drawings, the mysterious Asiatic art and a recent completely renovated presentation on Dutch history. by joecooper The Flower Market This is what Holland is famous for - horticulture. This market shows you why. You can find anything here from tulips to palm trees to cannabis seeds! All of the 'stalls' are actually floating on the canal, take a look from a bridge either end. Even if you don't buy anything, it is a wonderful place to go just to look at the colourful and strange plants on offer. If you want some flowers but know they won't last the journey home, why not buy some of the bulbs on offer and plant them when you get back home? Tulips flower year after year - a great souvenier! Watch out for the Christmas shop in a building opposite the market. It is open 365 days a year and sells Christmas decorations. Only in Amsterdam! Leave a Comment Address: Amsterdam

by joecooper The Red Light District The infamous RLD of Amsterdam! This is what many tourists come to see. Cannabis and prostitution are legal under license in The Netherlands and this is where the majority of such indulgances take place! It is unlikely that you will be hassled by drug dealers and street-hookers but on the other hand don't bring your grandma / grandchildren here! It is perfectly safe to walk through at night but be aware as with all big cities there are criminals about. As well as the brothels and coffeeshops there are numerous sex shops, sex museums and porn cinemas. That aside, there are also 'normal' cafes, bars, restaurants and other establishments. It looks great at night with all the lights, see my travelogue 'Amsterdam at Night' Leave a Comment Address: East of the centre, Amsterdam.

by shrimp56 The main museum in the Netherlands has much more than the Rembrandts and Vermeers that we all go to see. But to be honest -- in the limited time we had, that's what I saw! The museum had been smartly renovated since my long ago trip -- the pictures were exhibited well and the arrangement of rooms was well marked. by maksim_caine This unimposing canal house where two Jewish families hid from the Nazis for more than two years during World War II is one of the most frequently visited places in the world. The families were eventually discovered and sent to concentration camps, but young Anne's diary survived as a detailed record of their life in hiding. If you have time to see nothing else in Amsterdam, don't miss this house. The swinging bookcase that hid the door to the secret attic apartment is still there, and you can walk through the rooms where Anne and her family lived. by shrimp56 While this museum houses many of Van Gogh's paintings, it also has interesting exhibits placing Van Gogh's amazing work in the context of his era, both before and after! While we were there there was a fine impressionist exhibition as well as one of the 19th century painters before Van Gogh. The standard of the exhibition technology is very high and avant-garde. This is a 'don't miss'! Van Gogh picture is from WebMuseum: http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/ Leave a Comment Directions: This musem, as well as Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk [contemporary art] are in the museum area just outside the central canal district.Other Contact: http://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/
