Canal Boat Tours: Canal Cruising!
  • Tip Rating:
  • A pleasant hour on a canal boat and only a few Euros.

They run very frequently, so no need to book – I was told before I went to Amsterdam that this was a ‘must do’ – so I duly did as I was told. It was nice, not spectacular, just nice.

The multi-lingual recorded guided tour was useful – if anything, the boat ride was a welcome rest for the feet! A lot of the boat trips leave from Damrak – easy to find too!

Watch out though - they snap your pic as you embark, all processed and on public display by the time you return, but no obligation to buy!!

    Rijksmuseum: The Rijksmuseum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rijksmuseum (National Museum) is the largest museum in Netherlands (largest building, largest collection, largest staff and largest budget).

Unfortunately for the moment (from December 2003 to 2008) the Rijksmuseum is undergoing the biggest rebuilding and renovation works in its history. For visitors there is only a fraction of the total visit open to the public, and that is called The Masterpieces, offering a unique view on the 17th century grace period of the Netherlands. I've been told by VT member irisbe that most of the exibits were moved for the duration of the renovation works in Antwerp at "Rijksmuseum aan de Schelde" exibition. Thanks for the info Dannie!

About the building of the Rijksmuseum: It was built in 1885 by the architect P.J.H. Cuypers, in red brick, in the Neo-Gothic style, having more than 260 rooms.

Nieuwmarkt / Waag: In De Waag
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dating from the 1480's - this lovely building was once one of the city's gates. It has been a weighing-house and a place where the surgeons guild would perform public dissections! It has recently been completely renovated and is a beautiful cafe-bar/restaurant. (Fabulous chocolate cake served here :))

Moderate prices and open daily 10am-12am

Anne Frank House: The Anne Frank Memorial Statue
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just around the corner from the Anne Frank House, on the Westermarkt, is a a very sweet statue (by Mari Andriessen) of the little Jewish girl who lived in the Secret Annex until her family were found and she died at Bergen-Belsen, 3 months before her 16th birthday.
On the day that I visited there were an elderly gentleman and his grandaughter (greatgrandaughter??) - she was looking intently at the statue and listening to his explanation... it was for me one of the most moving moments of all my visits to Amsterdam.

    Tuschinski's - Cinema with Style
  • Tip Rating:
  • I saw Road to Perdition and Rabbit Proof Fence here... and it was 6.50E for a ticket. I would have paid that just to look around inside without seeing a film... it is absolutely stunning... this building is one of the best things about Amsterdam... It's interior is breathtaking and must be seen!!

The cinema has a sad history too... during WWII many Dutch Jews were rounded up and collected here to be sent on their way to the concentration camps.

    Canals, Bridges and Houseboats: House-Boats
  • Tip Rating:
  • House-boat in Amsterdam - Amsterdam
    House-boat in Amsterdam

Everyday Amsterdam's water canals are lively with boats, barges, sailing and rowing boats, motor boats and tour boats.

Not all of them are used for transport, some of them are real house-boats, used both by those who enjoy an original type of accomodation and those who have difficulty in finding an apartment.

There is a limited number of house-boats that are allowed to stay on the canals, so it is not possible for anyone to just anchor and live there.

Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum: The Hash Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • This place was fab n groovy :).. A "colourful local" took our few euros - and we wandered round looking at all the various paraphanalia associated with the growing and using of marijuana. We read about the history, religious significance and medicinal properties of weed. We looked through glass panels into the indoor garden growing healthy thriving plants. .. can't remember much else, couldn't have been that interesting after all!

    Open 11.00am-22.00pm

Central Station Area/St Nicolaas Kerk: Central Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Central Station is a beautiful huge building in neo renaissance style built on three artificial islands. When you come out of the station onto the big square you will see water and boats everywhere. For me, this was my first contact with Amsterdam. I was ready to discover "Venice of the North".

Canal Boat Tours: Canal Boat Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • Did you know that Amsterdam has 165 canals, 1281 bridges, 70 canal cruise boats, 8 wooden drawbridges, 2500 houseboats and 120 water bikes? A canal cruise is a must to explore and discover Amsterdam.

I feel the day tours are more interesting than the night ones, as there is more to see in the daytime. At least when i went on the night tour, the monuments, buildings were not highlighted, so couldn't see much. Turned out to be like a boat ride anywhere in the world. Day ones are special!

This is what the tour operators have to say (though i was not lucky enough to experience the night sights):
The canals are one of the major attractions of Amsterdam, also called 'Venice of the North.’ By daytime the canals are charming, by night they become even more enchanting because many canal houses and bridges are beautifully illuminated. The four main canals in the canal belt are Prinsengracht (Princes’ Canal), Herengracht (Gentlemen’s Canal), Keizersgracht (Emperor’s Canal) and Singel. For a refreshingly different view of Amsterdam, try a canal boat tour. You'll notice numerous tour operators near Central Station and along the Damrak and Rokin downtown.

  • Directions: Most of the canal cruise companies can be found near Central Station and Damrak as well on the Rokin near Muntsquare. The hotel concierges of the hotels are able to book cruises for you, but I recommend just to check rates at the boats as rates may vary.

Anne Frank House: Anne Frank's House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Anne Frank House and Museum - Amsterdam
    Anne Frank House and Museum
    by Rachael71

More VT tips are written about Anne Frank's House than any other attraction in Amsterdam, and with good reason. It's an extraordinary monument, not just to Anne, but to the millions of people who suffered under the Nazi regime.

Upon entering the museum, you pass through an interesting exhibition about Anne and the others who were in hiding with her, before reaching the rooms in which they lived for several years. Anne's own room still has the pictures of film stars that she pasted to the walls. The museum is so busy and bustling that it is difficult to experience the same silence that they must have had to bear day after day - I imagine that if you were there on a quiet day it would be quite eerie.

It's an extremely moving place to visit, compounded by the additional exhibition at the end of the museum that reminds us that even today people all over the world are experiencing the same prejudices and victimisation as Anne and her family did more than 60 years ago.

A tip - if you are visiting in the summer, go to the house in the early evening. It is open until 8pm, and the queues don't snake around the block as they do during the day.
