Rainy Day #2 - Another Brewery!!

This was a bit of an unexpectedly pleasant find for me as I passed quite an attractive windmill on the No 26 tram going into the city from my hotel out on the Eastern Docks - the windmill turned out to be a brewery!! The Brouwerij't IJ to be precise and so the following day it was time for a visit :)

Arriving at lunchtime I discovered that the brewery's tap room didn't actually open until 3 pm and so I had to seek shelter from the afternoon's torrential rain - fortunately there are plenty of little bars around to do so and a Heineken or 2 served to refresh the palate before the real work of the afternoon commenced.

The 6 different beers on tap this afternoon ranged from the relatively innocent 5% Plzen up to the serious Struis at 9% and made for a rather interesting little research project as the Tap Room filled with damp but thirsty customers all obviously embarking on their own personal researches - yep this is well worth a visit even if it's not a rainy day!!

Brouwerij 't IJ - Windmill Brewery Amsterdam

This is a novel thing to do. Visit a windmill in town which has been turned into a micro brewery. It's not at the top of the attraction list in Amsterdam and I can now see why as there weren't many people there and they didn't have much to offer.

Anyway, we did it....the beer was cheap....and we spent the time locating bottles of beer that we knew from the vast range of bottles on the shelves surrounding us. Check out the other pix inside - I found my local Queensland beer XXXX and also saw a strange beer - Bone Dry?... haha.

Brouwerij ’t IJ - local beer inside a windmill

Very far from the center , on a non-touristic place you will find a lovely windmill , one of the few that left in Amsterdam.
Inside the windmill there is a beer factory , one of the loveliest i've seen.
The beer is Organic and is made in the windmill.

the place is closed in the morning so you should check visiting times and on Saturday the place is open to public and is heavily crowded with happy , sometime drunk , local people.
The beer is not expensive - you can taste 6 100-150cc glasses for something like 5 Euro.

  • As the old song goes "Please DONT go"

I am always sorry to give a negative review but this time I can't really help it. I went with friends to this place with friends because it had a positive review on a werll known travel guide. I guess they have not updated this guide for ages ! The place is run down, with a boring atmosphere and - worst of all - the staff is simply very very rude. Rarely been treated this bad in the Netherlands. Make yourself a favour: go elsewhere. This place is far from the centre, the beer served is average and the servixce is lousy.

    Brouwerij ‘t IJ

by draguza Written Aug 5, 2014

Until May, or until the barrels run dry, which given the unusually warm and sunny weather could be sooner rather than later, visitors to Amsterdam’s unique micro brewery, Brouwerij ‘t IJ can sample the special ‘PaasIJ’ brew. The name comes from a combination of the Dutch word for Easter, Paas, and the name of the IJ (pronounced eye) river from which the brewery gets its name.
This reasonably strong, 7% spring beer is perfect for drinking under a blue sky while there’s still a chill in the air. One review described it as ‘having a subtle citrusy aroma which keeps the pallet on its toes, prepping for an initially sweet but crisp taste: complex with hints of coriander and banana. Slightly bitter hoppiness – thanks to certified organic hop flowers sourced from New Zealand – enters the picture, giving the impression of a wheat-IPA hybrid.’
Why not judge it for yourself?! At the same time you can enjoy the friendly crowd that regularly fill the terrace outside this local brewery which is located in in an old bath house in the shadows of an original windmill. The brewery also offers daily tours and tastings on Friday (15.00 and 15.30), Saturday (15.00, 15.30 and 16.00), and Sunday (15.00 and 15.30). Reservations via are recommended as they’re very popular.
