I haven't done a canal tour in over 30 years, but I learned a lot about Amsterdam, the Netherlands, their history, their local customs, etc, etc. It's a short-course into the Dutch culture, like a city tour by bus would be in nearly any other city. It's also a way to get around the city, from one place to another, instead of taking a taxi or bus.
Notice in both pictures there is a hinged, movable wall that can be used to shut off one part of the canal from another.

It's worth to take a boat and go around amsterdam and look at it from the water. But there are different routes and companies that offer the tour around canals. But it's better if you go for 1-2 hours,Because it took us 3 hours and at the end it was little bit boring, because the boat has so many stops where it picks up people.the tickets are about 15 euros.

Taxi Boats or canal tours are probably the most relaxing way to see Amsterdam. Canals interlink continuously and you get to see a lot more of Amsterdam. The only problem being that you can only disembark at specified ports along the way.

This is a lovely way to see the city and give your feet a bit of a rest! There are lots of places to board the boat tours and we took ours from the Rijksmuseum. It was 13E each and well worth it. The guide spoke English and German.

Don't expect luxury. This isn't much of a boat, but it can go places the big tour boats can't. Sign up at Boom Chicago for this tour. Grab a couple bottles of wine, some cheese and bread and head out on the water to see the sights from the canals. The trip will last about and hour and a half. Donation is 10 euro + tip.

This was the first thing we did in Amsterdam, on our first evening. I think this must be a pretty good time to do it, as there were no queues and the boat was much less crowded. The cost was €6.50 per adult for 1 hour. The tour was in four languages - Dutch, German, French and English - which did sometimes make it hard to follow as you'd zone out for the other languages and not realise when they started speaking your language! Otherwise, the tour was pretty good, it took you around some of the smaller canals, and then out into the larger harbour behind Central Station. It was just a really nice way to spend an hour, and see the city from a different level.

Another one of the things that most tourists do! And why not?! Amsterdam is a city of canals and no better way to have a dekko of city. Sit inside a covered long boat these people like to call canal bus and go around the city with a live commentary. Sometimes the commentary could be out of synch with where the boat is creating amusing confusion.
If you purchase Iamsterdam a ride in canal bus is included.

a fantastic introduction to Amsterdam. make sure you hop off and check out the sites at the stops.
**complaint: terrible start times. their start times were so late in the morning (10) which meant you didn't get to the sites until about 11 and your morning was not well spent**
**plus: your ticket is valid until noon the next day which means you can use it as a mode of transportation the following day**
