This theatre is perhaps the most famous theatre in the entire country (Freek de Jonge: "Royal Flush, Full House ...Carre!") Occasionally, it hosts a circus. We were there on 13 August 2005 and saw the Chinese State Circus with a thematic show based on H.C. Andersen's fairy tales Little Mermaid, Emperor's New Clothes &c.
When you like theater and its performances and shows, the CARRE THEATRE is a must! This beautiful theatre is the most famous in Holland and used to be the one place of circus master Oscar Carre (opened at December 3rd 1887). So once a circus the theatre was used, too, for variety hall with operas, operettas, and the famous Dutch One Man Show (performance started by Toon Hermans on 6th of December 1963).
If you just want to visit the theatre not watching a show, there are guided tours every Saturday at 11.00 hrs. Entrance is 8 Euro and the guided tour includes theater life for the full 100%. Great to do! You could go by "water-taxi", see link above ...
THEATRE CARRE AND THE CONCERT HALL
The most important cultural stages in Amsterdam are Theatre Carré and the Concert Hall.
Carré started in 1887 as a circus theatre.
These days the beautifull hall admits room for many music-, act- and danceperformances.
The concert hall was built in 1888.
The impressive concert hall is the classical music centre of the Netherlands, in which the famous concert hall orchestra succesfully performs for years now.
