This list wasnt present anywhere on the site so for all you wondering, here it is.....

    1) Greenhouse (Tolstraat): While this coffeeshop's product isnt quite as stong as that found at the Grey Area, their ambience and service more than make up for it. Try the hazes...especially Arjan's Haze (if its in stock)

    2) Gray Area: This is the best nug in the dam and for good reason. Run by two very cool Americans the Gray Area has won numerous Cups though it can be a lot more touristy and packed than places like the Greenhouse or Twede Kamer. Also DOPE bong collection

    3) Dampkring: My personal favorite coffee shop tough I know it can be a bit crowded and rowdy. Try the Jack Herer and Definitely try the AK-47 and the New York CIty Diesel.

    4) De Roklerij: The KALI MYST IS AMAZING. Great atmosphere, great weed, great location (right down from the Liedseplein).

    5) Barney's Breakfast Bar: Try going in the afternoon when it isnt packed with stoned tourists. The blonde hashes here are out of this world.

    Coffee Shops: Is weed obsolete?

    Funghi Porcini a magic
    mushroom!

    Weed might well be obsolete.
During my recent stay in Amsterdam I learned that the trend nowadays in Holland is for "paddos", Dutch word for "paddestoel" or mushroom.
Hallucinogenic mushrooms are now a must in Amsterdam.
The Dutch newspapers reported already deadly casualties with "magic mushrooms" among tourists.
Owners of coffee shops will be obliged to hire skilled botanists in order to avoid further lethal cases.
Although I have not a Ph.D. in mycology, I feel I could recommend "Funghi Porcini" as a magic mushroom. I had some in Verona (Italy, where this "paddo" is grown) together with tagliatelle and I can tell you that I reached the seventh heaven.
    ============
    New.
There are now rules in preparation by the authorities of Amsterdam on the sale of paddo's in what they call "smartshops":
"Kopers die voor het eerst in een smartshop komen en paddo's willen aanschaffen, krijgen de drugs pas minimaal drie dagen later. In de tussenliggende periode kunnen ze informatie vergaren over de werking ervan."
Translation : Buyers who are coming for the first time in a smartshop and want to buy hallucinogenic mushrooms will receive the drugs after a minimum delay of 3 days. In between they can get information about the action of these paddo's.
Last year there were 124 incidents in Amsterdam, some deadly, with hallucinogenic mushrooms mostly with young tourists.
    =========
    LATEST NEWS
Since December 1st, 2008 paddo's (hallucinogenic mushrooms) are prohibited in the Netherlands.

The "smartshops" organisation "De Vereniging Landelijk Overleg Smartshops" (sic) is furious.

Whether you fancy a coffee or a smoke – or even both, visit one (or more) of Amsterdams 450 or so euphemistically named ‘coffee shops’!! Full of character and fully legalised to sell marijuana / cannabis for personal use.

We were made to feel quite welcome in the few we visited. There is no pressure to try or buy anything – simply ordering just a mug of coffee is quite acceptable!

Of course Amsterdam is famous for their coffeeshops. I was in Amsterdam over Thanksgiving week 2005 for the cannabis cup. I went to about 18 different coffe shops and every one was different. One of my Favorite was the Grey Area (Oude Lelistraat 2). it is the only coffee shop owned by Americans and while it is quite small the owners are GREAT! As I said I went to many shops, so if you have any questions about which ones had the best stuff please email me.

Well, I'm not posting about Amsterdam coffee shops because I'm a blunt smoking pothead. I think that being from the United States, the strict drug laws that we have here, and the stigma attached to them, it is great to see a less conservative approach to the subject. No political agendas here, just an average middle of the road American that can appreciate a different culture's view on a subject. The atmosphere in the coffee shops that I visited was great. Not a wild and crazy drunkfest bar, or a disco with blaring drum and bass. Don't get me wrong, those places definately have their places on my social calendar. But if your looking for a relaxed atmosphere, a place to chill out ,strike up a conversation with someone, and listen to some good tunes, many of these coffee shops will suite you fine. One I visited was Rookies, great little place near the Leidseplein. And by the way, you don't have to smoke ganja at the coffee shops until you fall out. Most of them are great places to grab a beer as well! And oh yeah, they serve coffee, hence the name! :) So sit back, relax, and enjoy one of Amsterdam's distinctive experiences!

Coffee Shops: Coffeeshops -- the reason many come to Amsterdam.

  • There are dozens of them -- coffeeshops where you can purchase and consume marijuana and hashish.
I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but there are lots of folks (see the channels.nl website forums) who go to A-Dam almost exclusively to sample the cannabis at these shops.
Many shops also sell beer or soft drinks and snacks. Some even have considerable food menus.
You can purchase the weed and hash from a menu that lists the strains and the prices per gram. Basically, for about $10 U.S. or less, you can buy enough weed to knock you on your butt for a day or two.
The "dealers" in the coffeeshops are very knowledgeable and can advise customers on what strains of cannibis give what kinds of highs. Most of the strains were developed by medical marijuana growers.
Just don't buy drugs on the streets. Stick to the coffeeshops. And don't try to take any with you when you leave.
The Dampkring is my favorite coffeeshop. DeKuil is nice too.
I've got to say, if you're interested in visiting Amsterdam for the cofffeeshop scene, read Blueberry_7's pages on VT. Her information about weed, the shops and everything associated with them is excellent. Her pages helped me prepare for and enjoy my first trip there.
    Smoke one for me.

My favorite coffeeshop in Amsterdam. It is on the left side of the main street, coming from Central Station. Three floors, down floor it is coffeeshop, first floor it is beer bar, second floor it is a Spanish Restaurant. I have been on the three stages. Very good restaurant. The owner comes from my hometown Valencia!! Miracles of life

pictured is a typical "coffee shop" in amsterdam. these are business that sell marijauna. there are about fifty of these establishments in central amsterdam. drugs per se are illegal in holland but these establishments are condoned by the dutch government. another interesting aspect of dutch culture.
here is an update, in may 2008 the dutch government has banned cigarette smoking in all public buildings in holland. however the "coffee shops" of amsterdam have been given an exception.

Amsterdam has a very relaxed approach to many things very, very illegal in my home town. Shops selling coffee etc with either a Jamaican flag or plants in the window generally have menus of drugs for sale. The picture for this tip was a shop that seemed to sell only these products which I think even stretches the local approach to the topic.

There are some very good places and some total tourist traps. Grey Area and De Kuil were recommended as a couple of the best with Bulldog Cafe and Grasshoppers at the other end of the scale.

Be wary of people offering you stuff in the street!! Who knows what they are really selling you (unless you are an expert?). The coffee shops seem to have a reliable product (so I am led to believe.....) so you are generally safe selecting from the stuff on offer.
