Amsterdam has a very relaxed approach to many things very, very illegal in my home town. Shops selling coffee etc with either a Jamaican flag or plants in the window generally have menus of drugs for sale. The picture for this tip was a shop that seemed to sell only these products which I think even stretches the local approach to the topic.
There are some very good places and some total tourist traps. Grey Area and De Kuil were recommended as a couple of the best with Bulldog Cafe and Grasshoppers at the other end of the scale.
Be wary of people offering you stuff in the street!! Who knows what they are really selling you (unless you are an expert?). The coffee shops seem to have a reliable product (so I am led to believe.....) so you are generally safe selecting from the stuff on offer.

in our trip to amsterdam.we had to find the best space cakes.and we did, trust me...
the point of my travel tips is simple yet evident.so here how it goes :
we found this coffee shop called chocolatta true an old dutch man in another coffee shop telling us about those space cakes that his wife doesn't want him to eat anymore because he use to get lost going back home almost everytime( the man was nearly 70).
so we went and tryed... woowww!!!!!
so here is my tip if you find chocolatta take a business card or write down the address, cause we never been able to find it again...
then email me the address. :0)

Address: somewhere in amsterdam...
It's hard to describe the intial feelings of opening a menu showing all the varieties of marijuana available to go with your cappucino. 20 years ago, the feeling would have been euphoria, but sadly, I don't think 'it was legal where I smoked' would be an acceptable answer for a failed drug test. My wife and I bounced from cafe to cafe enjoying a relaxing afternoon.

get your pot from there. the folks at the counter when we came in were most helpful in suggesting what would be good for us newbies. they've got pre-rolled joints if you are not all that talented in rolling one or you can ask for a pipe or bong. doing so would mark you as a tourist though. don't go and be ambitious in seeking out the strongest strain..... the weak was strong enough but maybe that speaks more to the person than the product?
if pot does not really entice you, you can also get a drinky drink as ROOKIES is one of the few places that sells both pot and liquor. there is also a pool table that can keep you busy. they no longer sell spacecakes though. the guy helping us said that they were dangerous b/c people wouldn't be patient to feel its effect and would go on to eat far too many. we were able to find some at bulldog though.
a couple doors down from ROOKIES is a place that sells variations of shrooms. growing kits, chocolate bars, and a plethora of other stuff. the folks in the shop are quite generous in offering information about their products should the inquisitive mind be curious.

Coffee Shops. What a misnomer!!! ha ha. The coffee shops in Seattle are good for coffee and a few pastries. Coffee shops in Amsterdamn are good for pot and brownies! Frenquented a few but was just tagging along with some friends (I'm into beer and alchohol, not drugs). It was a good time thought.

Get a whiff.....
of what life is like after the ridiculous "war" (?) on soft drugs reaches a truce.
Not legal, but tolerated .. 'decriminalized' ... ( gedogen -- "turning a blind eye")
are the many coffeeshops in Amsterdam that sell world-class weed and hashish.
The Dutch have perfected growing & genetics to provide the best in the world
( though some of the talented breeders & growers of the great sativas of California would be up for taking the "pepsi challenge" on that statement.)
Imported hashish from Nepal, India, Morocco, all over the world is also available, along with the new extremely potent and overpriced Iceolater Dutch nederhash / jellyhash / "bubble-hash" strains.
Recommended shops(in no particular order):
Styxx, Anyday, Dutch Flowers, De Kuil, Siberie, the Noon, Softland (for Internet), Dampkring, Abraxas (tourist-friendly hash milkshakes); Greenhouse Tolstraat in Oud Zuid; Old Church, Tweede Kamer, .... It seems like there are thousands of them, and very quickly imho they become
zzzzzzzzzz boring boring boring boring boring.......
Grey Area across from Puccini's in area of Anne Frank Huis also has excellent product, but can sporadically be a little cramped and crowded with stoned, bong-sucking americans,
though Jon the bar/dealer seems to be a very cool dude (party on, Garth!).
Touristy ones to avoid include any named "Bulldog."

This list wasnt present anywhere on the site so for all you wondering, here it is.....
1) Greenhouse (Tolstraat): While this coffeeshop's product isnt quite as stong as that found at the Grey Area, their ambience and service more than make up for it. Try the hazes...especially Arjan's Haze (if its in stock)
2) Gray Area: This is the best nug in the dam and for good reason. Run by two very cool Americans the Gray Area has won numerous Cups though it can be a lot more touristy and packed than places like the Greenhouse or Twede Kamer. Also DOPE bong collection
3) Dampkring: My personal favorite coffee shop tough I know it can be a bit crowded and rowdy. Try the Jack Herer and Definitely try the AK-47 and the New York CIty Diesel.
4) De Roklerij: The KALI MYST IS AMAZING. Great atmosphere, great weed, great location (right down from the Liedseplein).
5) Barney's Breakfast Bar: Try going in the afternoon when it isnt packed with stoned tourists. The blonde hashes here are out of this world.

Have fun and enjoy the good times...there are tons of places ......a few will full your taste BUDS with all the elements of a good time.....people are laid back and generally pleasant....you'll find out pretty fast if someone wants to chat or not...hang out with those that do!......there are plenty at Rookies!
Oh ya...there is a gift shop sort of place across the street...open regular business hours...clothing and all ganga related things...rookies has a lot of their own items.

Our favorite cafe by far...in all fairness when we really like something we stick with it....oh ya, me being the hitch and myself......anyway, Rookies Cafe is a place weve hung out at quite a lot...and the three times weve been to Amsterdam Rookies was always the first stop and the last stop....well and a few in between..
Given the fact they are one of the few who serve both smoke and booze it has been a good place for us...the atmosphere is quite chill (which coffee shop isint?).....but there is certain combination of laid back pub and smoke shop...the tunes ease into the walls and range depending on how hte bartender feels.......they do though play full albums in the afternoons....we got stuck into some Floyd one day...the crowd is mixed with many coming and going after a drink but also core people who are around for a couple hrs...clientelle...ranges .....mostly locals or return visitors...there are though, tourists too...a good blend though, and the atmosphere eazes everyone into one big melting pot. Play a game of pool or grab one of the many table games for patrons to use....prices are decent...smoke is excellent...and they let you check out a couple types before purchase...pre rolleds are available and meaty!
Ive put some more pics in Rookies Pt#2.
oh and where it is???......just off Leidersplien...15 minute walk from the square...look it up on a map...easy enough..there is only one of them.
Enjoy!

I was amazed by the number of coffee shops in Amsterdam. Most are dumps, and there are a select few that I really enjoyed. The place I really liked was the Grasshopper on Spustraat. Clean, nice vibes, nice people. Pink floyd has good music, but watch out doing a nose dive off the stairs. The decor at the Greenhouse was way cool, but the staff is very freaky. The bouncer who is a dead ringer for the mob actor on Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells. He enjoyed intimidating the stoned visitors. He also liked to make passes at all the visiting women at the bar including my wife. If you over 40 (as I am) dont worry, most who visit the coffee shops are in there 20s and they can care less about your age. Please remember that there are some shops that sell beer (Dampring-Nes Cafe-Greenhouse)
