Get yourself to Rookies. I go EVERY year around November and will be returning this Friday.
The Rookies is situated just off the Leidseplein (or Led Zep as one of the guys once put it to a taxi drivert!) on the road between Burger King and the Sports Cafe.
There is a pool table and a wicked atmosphere. Get the chess set out, buy a freshly squeezed OJ and roll yourself a phat one :-)
Relax.......

Well, I'm not posting about Amsterdam coffee shops because I'm a blunt smoking pothead. I think that being from the United States, the strict drug laws that we have here, and the stigma attached to them, it is great to see a less conservative approach to the subject. No political agendas here, just an average middle of the road American that can appreciate a different culture's view on a subject. The atmosphere in the coffee shops that I visited was great. Not a wild and crazy drunkfest bar, or a disco with blaring drum and bass. Don't get me wrong, those places definately have their places on my social calendar. But if your looking for a relaxed atmosphere, a place to chill out ,strike up a conversation with someone, and listen to some good tunes, many of these coffee shops will suite you fine. One I visited was Rookies, great little place near the Leidseplein. And by the way, you don't have to smoke ganja at the coffee shops until you fall out. Most of them are great places to grab a beer as well! And oh yeah, they serve coffee, hence the name! :) So sit back, relax, and enjoy one of Amsterdam's distinctive experiences!

When in Amsterdam, there are going to be many coffee shops and stores in which you can partake in a variety of drugs. Obviously this is one of the city's main attractions, although it does have a lot of beauty and culture. There were a few places we visited. Baba's is one of my favorites, it's tucked in a little corner in the red light district, but it is very nice and lavish for a cheeba bar. Good product at good prices. The bulldog is good as well, but its almost like the Starbuck of herb. Don't be fooled by the outside appearance of any of the bars and shops, because you might find yourself pleasantly surprised once inside. In general, don't be afraid to explore with a group of friends, never alone!

This is by far my favorite coffee shop. It's a small place but not usually crowded and the atmosphere is great. The bar tender was a beautiful woman with a great personality. It has the normal music program that any and every business in Holland has and she was very open to requests. Drinks upstairs, smokes downstairs. This was the place I always went to after a long walk back from a museum. Open 10am to 1am(?) Confirmation of business hours and some photos of the place when I go back this December.

This is a spotless, clean coffeeshop that is completely void of American burnouts sitting on couches. The smoke is fantastic, there is local art on the walls, the prices are great, and the staff is incredibly friendly.
This shop stands out and lacks the tourist-trap vibe.

If you go into Leidseplein, you'll see this place right next to Burger King.
Avoid it.
Drinks are incredibly expensive (10 EURO for a pint of beer) and the smoke is the absolute worst in the city.
Service is absolutely terrible.
This is not a true coffeeshop. It is a tourist trap.

Whether you fancy a coffee or a smoke – or even both, visit one (or more) of Amsterdams 450 or so euphemistically named ‘coffee shops’!! Full of character and fully legalised to sell marijuana / cannabis for personal use.
We were made to feel quite welcome in the few we visited. There is no pressure to try or buy anything – simply ordering just a mug of coffee is quite acceptable!

While I was only in amsterdam for five hours, my stroll through the red light district was very entertaining. After leaving the airport you should take the train fifteen minutes into central station. From there the weed is only a hop skip and a jump away. Never before did i see soo many people puffing herb without a care in the world. Once you turn off of the main drag and into the alleys you are entered into the unique world of the Amsterdam coffeshop. Herb and hash is legal in small amounts from local coffeshops. There is a plethora of info on the shops and they are all relatively close to one another, so my advice isn't really needed. Just enjoy the pics in my travelouge.
