by heryanta OK there's more to the Netherlands than Amsterdam; and Zaanse-Schans is recommended if you would like to see the windmills and houses that are often associated with the Netherlands. Located about 20 minutes away from the city this is where I take guests visiting the country for the first time. The whole complex can be seen in less than 3 hours. They have working windmills, old Dutch houses, shops, restaurant and cafe's and it's a great place to take pictures :) Address: Schansend 7, ZaandamPhone: +31 (0)75 6168218Directions: From Amsterdam Central Station take the train going to Uitgeest and stop at station Koog-Zaandijk. Follow the directions, it is about 10 minutes walk.Website: www.zaanseschans.nl

Every friday in summer there is the cheese auction at Almaar, from ?10 am until 1pm or just a little after. Still in traditional costumes it makes an interesting spectacle whether for the tourist that come in droves - and also support the stalls and markets (cheese, clogs, dutch crepes and raw anchovies if you wish!) that set up around the auction site. Rather pretty area with river and canals and interesting town hall and surrounding old buildings. Canal tours are available and advertised right there at the site for only 4.75 and 5 euro for one and a half hours. There are half to 45 minutely trains from centraal station that take 45 minutes to Almaar for 11 euro day return ticket. then its a 10 minute walk to the cheese auctions. When i got off at the train station at alkmaar there was a woman with a temporary info stand with maps of the alkmaar centre - handy but didnt show the location of the cheese auction - take the main street into the centre, aim for the town hall or main canal right down the end of the main street and then turn left and you will, as i did, hopefully find it! Leave a Comment Directions: as above, 10 mins walk from the station into the centre of almaar. aim for the town hall

Leiden Cathedral by fellman01 If you are looking for a great way of spending a day out then visit Leiden. The National Museum of Natural History is located there. When we visited there was a special exhibit of Tin Tin so don't expect to only see flora and fauna. The museum is a few minutes walk from the Train Station. Another must see is the Valk Municipal Windmill. This is one of the few mills open to the general public and it contains a full explanation of how mills developed over time. Finally, just walk aboutt and visit the churches, citadel, and the shopping. Make sure you stop by a local cheese shop and baker for a reasonable meal! by J3R3MIE Amsterdam is great but you might want to go to Volendam for a few hours, I say its really worth it. It's a little fishing type of town about 20mins from Amsterdam. Theres countless souvenirs shops (better than Amsterdam's) so you can either shop or just stroll along the beach... I loved it :) Leave a Comment Address: about 20minutes north of Amsterdam

We have just returned from a winter trip to the Netherlands and would strongly recommend that family travellers take a day trip to the Efteling amusement park. This park combines some great family rides with animatronic retellings of some of the more beloved fairy tales of our youth. Your admission covers all rides. This was certainly a highlight for our children (including the teens) and we both enjoyed it as well. by mrg8080 A 30 minute bus ride from Amstel stations brings you to lovely Muiderslot (or Muiden) castle. It's in a nice little town and you can take a tour throughout the castle interior. Unfortunately you can't take pictures inside, but the castle is very old and rugged. If you've got a couple days in Amsterdam, take this side trip. Directions: Take the bus from Amstel station, the attendants will make it easy - only a few EurosWebsite: http://www.muiderslot.nl

Delft is lovely, historic, and easy to reach from Amsterdam for a day trip. The Train station is not particularly attractive but do not let that discourage you. The city played an important role during the 16th century Dutch revolt against Philip II and their spanish overlords. Philip encouraged the assasination of William the Silent (it occured in Delft) This act would lead to the execution of Mary Queen of Scots and was a precursor to the Spanish Armada. You can still visit the Prince's house (appropriately called the Prinsenhoff) and view the exact spot of the assasination and the scars caused by the bullets on the wall. Delft has had a close association with the House of Orange since the death of William. The Royal mausoleums (including that of William the Silent) may be found in the New Church. The tower may also be climbed, this presents a very attractive view of the city. There is also a cultural museum, technical museum, and of course the Delft pottery factories. (2 of them are still in the city. Don't miss it. Leave a Comment

Zaanse Schans is where you'll see the beautiful windmill-studded countryside. There's a row of Windmills along the village on the banks of the Zaan river.. It is about 16km northwest of the city and just north of the town of Zaandam.. The village also has historic little wooden houses, many of them restored as private homes. Ouderkerk aan de Amstel by Pijlmans Not far from Amsterdam you will find the charming village Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. The village is divided in two parts by the river Amstel. Ouderkerk aan the Amstel is a small village, about 200 years older than Amsterdam. It has many excellent restaurants, and some of them have their terraces at the waterside. It is a good idea to escape Amsterdam for a moment and have lunch or dinner in this beautiful quiet village. Leave a Comment
