In 1969, he spent ten days in Amsterdam and visited Heineken Brewery many times. At that time, it was still a working brewery and there was no admission fee. The free guided tour took visitors throughout the brewing process, and at the end, beer and cheese were offered free of charge in a large drinking hall. Being a starving college student/young tourist, Charles returned for the free beer and free cheese -- repeatedly. On the third day, the staff recognized his face and thanked him for his multiple visits. Upon finding out it was his birthday that day, they presented him with a Delft blue mug, which he treasured for years until the handle broke off. Over three decades later, the brewery is no longer a functional one and there is a second name on the building: Heineken Experience. Admission is now €11, the drinking hall has been replaced by two sophisticated bars, and there is no longer free cheese with beer. Nevertheless, Heineken Experience is still a fun thing to do if you like beer and have a couple of hours to spare. In exchange for the entrance fee, visitors receive three large beers and a gift. On our visit, the gift was an aluminum replica bottle of Heineken with a bottle opener inside. The three glasses of beer is worth the price of admission already, so it's not a bad deal, especially since the renovated old brewery is full of fun things to see and do. The glass staircase, the copper vats, the theatre, and the studio to make your own video and mix your own music are just some of the attractions included in the tour. By the way, the same vintage Delft blue mug that was given to Charles as a birthday gift 38 years ago is still available at the Heineken gift shop. The price is €27 now! One of the must see place for all you malt lovers out there :) The original Heineken brewery in Amsterdam, dating from 1930. Between 1930-1988 this famous (and very good indeed) beer was made right on this spot. Now on the building is the Heineken Experience beer museum. Inside, for an admission price of 10 EUR you can discover the secret of making one of the best beers in the world. From the big malt silos to the steering wagons, and of course to the bar where you'll be given a Heineken beer to "taste", the experience is not so extraordinary, but surely a pleasant journey into the "beer world". Well..... to be honest I didn't actually have a lot of interest in seeing this place..... but we were passing by and I thought I'd take a picture. BUT I can understand how some people might consider this a "Must See Activity" so I have included it here. I do know that tours are Mon-Fri 9.30am-11.00am and in Jun-Sept they are also on at 1pm-2.30pm AND if that isn't enough, in Jul-Aug they are held on Sat 12 non-2pm. Apparently tours are really popular so get your tickets in advance. Leave a Comment Directions: Northern edge of the De Pijp district.

Well, what else can be said about this other than the fact that for 10 Euros you get: -A self guided tour through the Heineken brewery, seeing all you would ever wish to see about the history of the beer -3 free beers handed out at the two bar "rest areas" of the tour -A free Heineken beer glass A nice little tour, the beer alone makes it a good investment!

For you, it will be no surprise since you know your lager that Amsterdam is the home of Heineken lager. Beer friends, attention! Entering the museum you get four different coloured tokens, each for an Amsterdam sized beer at the pubs. One at halfway, near the copper cauldrons, and the See You Again Bar at the exit. These are probably the cheapest beer you will find in Amsterdam! For non-beer drinkers there are Coke, Orange or mineral water. The self guided tour takes you through the history of brewing beer and the past of Heineken, also an interesting selection of old photos. Its a little more than just a "beer tour" through the rooms of the old factory. There is an amusing moving experience half way in a small room with a screen, where you are put into the role of a Heineken bottle on the conveyor belt, in order to feel what it is like being a bottle. You start the ride as an empty bottle with thousands of other bottles, following the different processes until you emerge as a filled bottle. You can email your photo to friends from the brewery, to share the Heineken Experience with them. It is recommended to those who love beer and want to see how one of the best beers in the world has been made. The only problem is that the only beer available is the lager, even though Heineken brews more than 120 beers. Open: During summer time, daily 11.00am - 7.00pm. last entry 5.45pm. From September until May, daily except Monday 10.00am - 6.00pm. last entry 5.00pm. Admission fee: 11.00€ - Under 18 the entry is not allowed Phone: +31-20-5239666Directions: Located in the former Heineken brewery, from Centraal Station by Tram: 16 or 24, Stadhouderskade stop. 5 minutes of walking from Leidseplein. during the summer most of the attractions are open until late - got to the heinekken museum at 6pm and still lots of time to take my time through the place, tho other things to see also on my itinerary - but for 10 euro the ticket shows itself itself to be pretty good value! 3 tokens are given so that at various points through the self-tour you get to trial Heinekkens beer - not that they need our opinions, they have done hugely successfully since its origins - but its an interesting tour and i did enjoy my beer! the first beer stop you get to use on of your tokens for a pint. the bar at the end of the self tour you get to use your last two tokens for any two drinks - i was hoping for a shandy!! but no true lemonade but a lemon flavoured fanta type drink was also recommended by the bar tender as a good potential addition to dilute my beer (too many more museums and walking to fit in to have to swagger!!) , so any non alcoholic is allowed for your tokens. then a free gift is also included - so for the budget conscious heres your chance for a free and rather handy souvenir - a Heinekken bottle opener inside a bottle- to add to your tulip and cheese souvenirs!? After visiting the Guiness Brewery in Dublin, I felt it was only right to visit the home of Heineken. Not being a beer drinker, I'm not sure why I felt compelled but it was well worth the experience. Along with your 10 euro ticket you get 3 free drinks and a free gift. Luckily for me, not being a beer drinker, soft drinks could be substituted for beer. Though, I did drink one Heineken in a spirit of appropriateness. And I learned a new term, "skulled" - the only was to get the beer down was to drink it all in one go. Maybe that's why I enjoyed the museum so much... Leave a Comment

Big museum dedicated to Heineken. You get 3 beers and a glass for your visit. While no beer is actually brewed there it was a very interesting exploring the evolution of the company. Includes a multi-media look at their ads over the years and a virutal ride on a a horse pulled carriage. Leave a Comment

"Heineken". It's the reason you give to imigration officers when asked why you're visiting Holland. What trip here is complete without a visit of the Mecca of the beer world?? At least in MY world... :) THIS IS THE EVENT YOU'VE BEEN PRACTICING FOR!! One thing that bites is the early start times. There's usually two, at like 9 & 9:30AM ! Uggh... But if you're a trooper & hang through the history, processing, ect of Heineken, then you're rewarded with 30 minutes to pound as many Heiny's as you can hold, (& still behave..). With the time constraints emposed, things develop QUICKLY. People show a talent for pounding them, even the babes! With people for all over the world, It's International relations at it's BEST.
