NeMo museum in Amsterdam by codrutz Again I found in Amsterdam the name of the little clown fish - NEMO :) As well as the Disney's movie, the Nemo museum is designed for children aged 4-16 (as well as for their parents) fascinated by science and technology. I admit I didn't go inside but instead I have admired the original shape of the massive building from the cruise boat. The NeMo (National Center for Science and Technology) boat-like green building was designed by Renzo Piano, not other than the one who designed the Centre Pompidou in Paris (hosting the Museum of Modern Art and a vast library). The exterior is covered with copper and in time it took the green color. The roof of the building is sloped and uses as a roof terrace. There are stairways on the sides that leads people to the terrace, which provides a view of both Amsterdam and the water of the IJ. Leave a Comment

VOC ship "AMSTERDAM" by breughel The replica of the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) ship "Amsterdam" is now moored by the NEMO. The original Amsterdam sailed up the North Sea in 1749. In a raging storm the East Indiaman soon sank on the south coast of England. The wreck has provided archaeologists with valuable information about the construction of VOC ships, their cargoes and life on board. This replica is very interesting for children as it shows the details of the life on board for the eight months trip to Asia. Connoisseurs of maritime construction are not enthusiast about this replica. In order to allow demonstrations of gun shooting the gun deck with 16 replicas had its height increased. The Dutch visitors from now are about 25 cm taller than the 18th. c. crew. But to keep the overall height of the ship correct the height of the upper deck with the captain's cabin has been decreased so that only children can enter the cabin! The NEMO museum seems consequently a good place to keep this replica. Open : Tuesday - Sunday 10 - 17h. Also open on Monday from June to August. Price: 4 yr and more 4 € - in combination with NEMO ticket : 2 €

Oustanding architecture by Jenniflower This was one of the stops on our Canal boat hop-on-hop-off tour. Our first glance of it is this almost surreal-like green object projecting out of the water... in total juxtaposition to the antiquated architecture elsewhere in Amsterdam. It is quite stunning, with clean lines and curves. This is the largest futuristic science center in the Netherlands, and the extraodrdinary building was designed by Renzo Piano. Here you enter into the world of science and technology, and what is nice here is that you can reach out and touch things, which in most museums you cannot. (The Science Museum in London is the same - you can touch most things). This makes the experience all the more interactive and enjoyable for youngsters and oldies (like us! haha) alike. Nemo by Jarin Since 1997 is this biggest science centre in the Netherlands situated here in this building, which has the shape of a 30 m ship above the water surface. It is an educational attraction, where you can discover a world of science and technology in an entertaining way. In fact you are not a visitor, but a researcher, so you will learn about technology and engineering, ICT and bio- and behavioural sciences. Do not omit to visit the upper deck (roof). It has a magnificent view over (historic) Amsterdam and in summer it is transformed into a beach. In general: open daily except on Monday Leave a Comment Phone: +31 20 5313233Directions: Near to Netherlands Maritime Museum Amsterdam and behind the Central station.Website: http://www.e-NEMO.nl Other Contact: fax: +31 20 531 3535

Nemo museum is a futuristic science centre designed by Renzo Piano Here the emphasis is on touching the exhibition & experimenting Great for children Entry is Euro 11 For Euro 2.50 you can climb in the back entrance up about 130 steps & get a great view of the harbour. The entry price includes a free drink in the bar - we managed to get in for free as the weather was not great so no-one was manning the entrance. These stairs have a water feature & deck chairs simulating a beach set up. There is a telescope & an ariel viewing map of things you can see from the top of the stairs what to look out for Leave a Comment

NEMO building seen from a canalboat by tompt The NEMO museum is a mueum that kids really like. It is a modern center for science and technology. There are some fun hands on exhibitions here. The building (1997) is from the Italian architect Renzo Piano and looks like a green ship, rising from the water. If you don't fancy this sort of museum it is also nice to go there for the view. From the Prins Hendrikkade you can reach the museum?s highest point via some stairs and a footbridge. The roof is open to everyone. Leave a Comment

Nemo and the "Amsterdam" by Dabs One of the interesting buildings we passed on the Canal Trip was the NEMO Science Center. While their website says it looks like a "large green ship moored on top of a busy car tunnel", I thought it looked like a whale breeching the water. The ship next to the Nemo building is a replica of the "Amsterdam" which is temporarily moored there until the renovation of the Maritime Museum is complete. Leave a Comment

NEMO by guell The New Metropolis Museum (NEMO) is an educational attraction where you and your kids can discover a world of science and technology in an entertaining way. Amsterdam: view from Nemo, looking to the west by OlafS The roof of Nemo is something like a combination of a tribune and a square. Officially it is a square, named after Wim T. Schippers, artist, writer, singer, generally silly man and, most important, the voice of Ernie in the Dutch version of Sesame Street. From this place you have a fabulous view over the city! And it's a public place, so it's accessible for non-visitors to Nemo too. If you want to make some panorama shots or just want to admire the view, go here. More pics with explanations are in the Panorama travelogue. Leave a Comment
