Allard Pierson Museum is the archaeological museum of the University of Amsterdam. The museum is housed in a nice classical building formerly from the Nederlandsche Bank. Allard Pierson was a professor who started the collections on the civilisations of ancient Egypt (on the first floor), the Near East, Cyprus, the Greek world, Etruria and the Roman world (on the second floor). Another professor J. Six completed the collection. This collection has not the importance of the British museum or Le Louvre but the Art-objects and utensils, give a good insight of everyday-life, mythology and religion in Antiquity. They are displayed in a modern way. Room 2 on mummification is interesting as well as the large scale model of Olympia. Photos are allowed so that I set up a travelogue with some art-objects I liked. Opening hours Tuesday - Friday: 10.00 - 17.00 hrs. Saturday - Sunday: 13.00 - 17.00 hrs. Monday: Closed Admission: Adults € 5, children from 4 to 16 € 2,50, seniors (over 65) 2,50 €, Free with Museum Kaart. Address: Oude Turfmarkt 127 (opposite Rokin).

by Mariajoy This is the museum dedicated to the bravery of the Dutch Resistance from 1940-45. The exhibits include masses of photographs, original artefacts, illegal newspapers, printing presses etc as well as a library. Some displays are interactive and all info is in Dutch and English. Adult entrance costs 5 Euro and the museum is open 10-5 Tues-Fri and 12-5 Sat-Mon. Children under 7 go free but it's not really the kind of place that would interest a child so young. Leave a Comment

WoonBootMuseum by Mariajoy The WoonBoot Museum is a little houseboat dedicated to "how they used to live". It was once a commercial sailing ship built in 1914. It really is quaint and even has a little video area (can't remember what it was showing though!). It was only 2.50E when we went. It's amazing how they could live, work and raise a family of 10 kids and care for their ageing grandparents in a space no bigger than the average saloon car. They all slept in a cupboard bed and during the day the kids would play with the coal in the cargo hold while mum and dad scrubbed decks, heaved and hoiked tons of coal around probably worked themselves to an early grave. (Ignore this last paragraph it's just my imagination :)) They serve tea , coffee and soft drinks and you can buy postcards and souvenirs in the Museumwinkel - Mrs WoonBoot wouldn't believe her eyes. Huis Marseille by codrutz For the photography lovers, there are two museums included in the Amsterdam Pass. One is the Huis Marseille Foundation for Photography, located in five exibition rooms in a monumental 17th century canal house on the Keizergracht. This will also give you a great opportunity to see the inside of such a remarcable house and, of course, to see the photography collection on display. Leave a Comment

Here you can get a glimpse of how a wealthy dutch family lived in an 18th and 19th century canal house. Upon Mrs Willet-Holthusen’s death her will left her 17th century canal house to the city of Amsterdam stating it must be made into a public museum – this immortalises the family name through history. On the 2 floors there is an elegant ballroom as well as a dining area & master bedroom all furnished with comparable furnishings. In the basement a kitchen & scullery giving one a glimpse of what the servants were required to do. The servants also entered into the house at the basement level where we enter today. The garden is laid out in a French fashion the more statues you had in the garden displayed your wealth. Apparently there used to be a nightclub next door of course not in those days but you can see from the garden it has been torn down & we now await to see what is going to be going up in its place. Adults Euro 6 Child Euro 3 Open Mon - Fri 10am - 5pm wknds 11-5pm Leave a Comment

© Allard Pierson Museum by codrutz Archaeological Museum of the University of Amsterdam, or ALLARD PIERSON MUSEUM is also a great place to visit in Amsterdam. In the recently installed Egyptian department you can see a model of the Pyramid of Cheops and other pyramids at Giza, and mummies and funerary and ritual objects; a computer prints out your name in hieroglyphics. Ancient Greece, Rome, Etruria, and Cyprus are among the best represented of other cultures, with pottery, sculpture, glassware, jewelry, coins, and household objects. The Allard Pierson museum of archaeology is rather quiet, with not so many visitors, and you can take your time and admire the nice antiques (really antiques pieces of art .. or just pieces of that times - that's also very valuable after few thousand years). The admission is free with the Amsterdam Pass, or 4,3 EUR (adult) / 1,4 EUR (12-16) / 1 EUR (4-12) without, so basicaly it's cheap and a recommended visit. Leave a Comment
