There's so much to see and do whilst in Amsterdam - there are loads of museums to visit, fantastic architecture and structures, and then theres the legal stuff that would normally be illegal (to me anyway!).
You have to walk through the Red Light District to experience the surroundings (yes, I said surroundings!).
I was also tempted into strolling through the Sex Museum - unbelievable!
What I am trying to say is that there are so many things to see here. It's very difficult for me to point one single thing out - saying that, do the right thing and take in 'Van Goghs Museum', theres a good boy!
You'll either be repulsed or amused as you wander through here. I did not visit here with my uncle! I waited for my friend, Serge, to show me this part of Amsterdam. One of those places that you just have to see to believe.
This pic is of a fountain outside Amsterdam's oldest sex show, and no I did not go in!
Had to take pic of the fountain, though! Once I had stopped laughing that is.
The Red Light District
The infamous RLD of Amsterdam! This is what many tourists come to see. Cannabis and prostitution are legal under license in The Netherlands and this is where the majority of such indulgances take place! It is unlikely that you will be hassled by drug dealers and street-hookers but on the other hand don't bring your grandma / grandchildren here! It is perfectly safe to walk through at night but be aware as with all big cities there are criminals about. As well as the brothels and coffeeshops there are numerous sex shops, sex museums and porn cinemas. That aside, there are also 'normal' cafes, bars, restaurants and other establishments. It looks great at night with all the lights, see my travelogue 'Amsterdam at Night'
Despite the cities attempts, it cannot seem to shake its seedy reputation the source of which lies deep in the heart of the red light district.
In this part of the city, you can order marijuana and hash from a menu at any of the 'coffee shops', or go window shopping for a prostitute. If your looking for sex, there are live shows, shops, museums, bookstores, or you could opt for the personal attention of a prostitute or two.
It turns out that negotiations start at $50 ,but we decided that it was a little bit too much to pay for a disease.
Well there's nothing special too see here except for professional hookers and drug dealers. It is interesting (although a bit shocking perhaps) though to take one strool through RLD if you come from a small country like Slovenia where you can never see something like this. Be a bit careful though (especially at night), because the people and surroundings are not of the most friendliest kind here.
there is heaps here..the red light district..be careful, Museum of Sex (located on Damrak), and Museum of Erotica (Red light district, night time only)..Van Gogh museum, canal cruise...so much and so little time!
You should see the Red Light District.
If you don't feel comfortable walking past the prostitutes and their custumers I suggest you drive by in the boat you rent.
The canals in this area are beautiful, and by night you'll really see why the area got it's name!
Besides the prostitutes, the sex shows and the strip joints you can also find the Tatoo Museum and the Marijuana Museum.
Take a walk in the Red Light Disctrict.
Unforgettable experience. I walked early in the afternoon, but that was impressing enough already. Unfortunately photoshooting is not welcomed here, so I shot only the street itself, not its inhabitants. Red lights are not literary word, they are really there, you can see some on the picture!
A quite different way of window shopping you can do in Amsterdams red light district. There are also several gay leather bars in the area.
These guys looked very much at home in the RLD canalside in their pink tutus----looked like they were fixing to check out soon-----
They get quite upset if you stare and them and even more so when you take photo's of them. Usually they turn their backs to you or alternatively close the window curtain.
Walking around in this area can be quite an eye opener when you come from a fairly strict upbringing and a country where sex shops is still quite a novelty.
Here you can see prostitues behind windows with red lights. When the have the curtains closed the have work to do.
better not take pictures of the woman here. but like of the bridges.
Very interesting... Walk around but don't take any pictures of the girls... if you do and you get caught, it could be a very memorable vacation you've ever had.
Fabulous people watching...
If you are easily offended, this is perhaps not the place for you.
watch your wallet.
