The Red Light District
This is probably the most famous Red Light district in the world. It's kind of surreal actually. My first time there I saw whole families taking in the sites and the kids were eating ice cream along the way! What makes this place different from other places is that the prostitutes are behind glass windows or doors giving a whole new meaning to window shopping. The area, contains a lot of sex shops and xxx theaters and shows. Many of the coffee shops that sell the funny weed are in the area as well. However, the area is as safe as any major tourist area as it is always packed and streets are watched with cameras.
Other things of interest include the Prostitution Information Center, the Erotic Museum, and the Sex Museum. "Honestly, it's not mine!"

Nothing is wrong with window shopping......... for hookers.
Don't get caught taking pictures of the prostitutes! They get pissed! I had to have my friend pose and zoom in over his shoulder for this picture.
Everything you expect.....
Its a bloke's paradise - and yet one of the more amazing sites in the red light district is the number of couples that are roaming, arm in arm, around the area.
Name it - want to get laid, watch someone else getting laid, smoke a joint without having to go to the loo/outside/home etc or all of the above at once - it's all available and legal.
The girls are on display in shop windows, don't need to be furtively approached and are government regulated. The drugs are in menus in the coffee shops and (I warn you) are not to be scoffed at - and not expensive either. The strip and sex shows are authentic (no mirrors or camera tricks here) and the whole area is full of like minded people who don't care if you want to stare at the new 'Hyper Rabbitt' in the window in front of you....
Most of all, due to the reputation of the area and the enormous (though quite discreet) police prescence, it is - by and large - very safe. Young girls wander the streets at 2am unmolested, small geeky guys can go about their business without fear of mugging and small green furry things from alpha centauri can ... (oops - don't get me started...)
Its a 'must see' - if you go to Amsterdam without seeing the red light district you'll always wish you had...
Stop At The Red Lights
This was one hell of an eye opener. I really didn't know what to expect before strolling down here, but one word sums it up at night- CRAZY!
When we weren't being accosted by bouncers trying to tempt us in to their shows, we were being seduced by scantily clad ladies behind glass windows in red lighted rooms. There were a whole variety of people and cultures represented here, and it was very obvious that certain people were there for different reasons. We fell in to the wide eyed tourist category, and we were certainly taken aback. If you aren't easily offended, then you should definately check this place out regardless of whether your there to 'help the trade.'

Not a place to take the kids obviously, but if it all adults you are with, a trip on evening to the Red Light district really is a must see believe it or not!!
It's just fascintaing, and there really are ladies in the windows that one can pick and choose from if you are so inclined.
It a buzzing atmosphere, and not as seedy as you would imagine, and adds the experience of Amsteram as a whole.
Red light district
A walk down the red light district is a trip that NOT every one should take. You'll see everything from every kind of hooker (beautiful, fat, hard-core leather, he-woman, ect.) trying to persuade you for 50 Euro, while at the same time crack dealers whispering they have the best coke ("straight from columbia") to the smell of the best pot anyone would ever...

Red light district....
Red light district. ('Walletjie Straat')
The notorious area of Amsterdam where anything goes. Although it might sound sleazy, with all the prostitutes and drugs around, it's one of the safest areas in the city, because of the large police presence.
Check out the city's infamous Red Light District
Ok....some people might shun this activity for fear of getting embarrassed. But hey, there's no harm in taking a stroll down the city's infamous area for a look. In fact, the place itself is such a big tourist attraction that you'll find yourself walking among throngs of people, all eager to catch a longer look at the scantily clad hookers posing behind glass displays under neon lights. Just some harmless fun. Go during the late evening where it would be less crowded. But be warned..no photography is allowed, unless you want to get a clob on the head by a high heel shoe or get tossed into a nearby canal.

Red Light District (wallen)
Here you can see prostitues behind windows with red lights. When the have the curtains closed the have work to do.
better not take pictures of the woman here. but like of the bridges.
Discovering the red light district
Walking around in this area can be quite an eye opener when you come from a fairly strict upbringing and a country where sex shops is still quite a novelty.
Ladies of the red light district
They get quite upset if you stare and them and even more so when you take photo's of them. Usually they turn their backs to you or alternatively close the window curtain.
By night in Amsterdam
If you go to the red district...make shure you know what you are looking for.
You can get some...not nice souvernis.
