Rijksmuseum by SnoopySue Rijksmuseum is a paradise for those who like Dutch school of painting. Since Rembrant and others are my favorites, I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed in their masterpieces. But the one is something really special - Rembrandt's Night Watch. It is even beyond artistic expression. More like a magic...And Vermeer...His paintings (Dutch beauty, for example) are so real looking more like photos and posters than paintings. Awesome!!! Vermeer - The milkmaid by morganna This is one of those huge national museums you can find in a lot of important european cities (in fact, in the origin, Louis Bonaparte wanted to make a sort of Louvre in Holland, as his brother had in Paris). I find interesting that it was build over an important road. Nowadays, cars don't go under the museum, troguh a tunnel. Even if I think it is difficult to compare the Rijks with Louvre, British or even Prado, this museum is an absolute must. The best rooms are, of course, dedicated to dutch paintings. Maybe the most renowned are Vermeer and Rembrandt, but I enjoyed a lot the old masters (15 and 16 centuries), where almost nobody seemed to be interested! - It's open every day from 10.00 to 17.00 (only closed on 1st Jan). The entrance fee is 9,00 EUR. Detail of exterior by ChrsStrl Interestingly they allowed photography without flash in the museum. But I find that a lot of people go for what is inside and never look at the buiolding which has many pleasant details and a nice garden at the back to rest museum-weary bones! Leave a Comment

Night Watch by Rembrant by BorneoGrrl The Rijksmuseum holds one of the largest collections of Rembrandt's paintings in the world. The Jewish Bride, The Syndics of the Amsterdam Drapers Guild, the Self-portrait of Rembrandt as a Young Man and, of course, The Night Watch, are among his most famous works. Personally, I like the dollhouses which is appealing even to both children and adults. There are also magnificient works of art at the Rijksmuseum by other Dutch artists e.g Vemeer To be honest, I was a little disappointed when I visit the Rijksmuseum because for 10 euros, I expected more. I was informed that the museum is undergoing a major renovation and should be completed by 2008. Even walking slowly, I finished the whole museum in 2 hours. I've spent more time at the Lourve and the Vatican museums so you can understand how I feel. Admission fee is 10 euros for adults The Rijksmuseum is open every day from 9:00-18:00hr

The Rijksmuseum building in Amsterdam by mikelisaanna, 2 more photos The Rijksmuseum is one of the world's great art museums. It features hundreds of masterpieces by famous Dutch artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Steen, and Brueghel. The museum's most famous artwork is the Night Watch by Rembrandt. The Rijksmuseum is currently under renovation. However, the highlights of the collection are still on display in a corner of the museum, so you can still get a good sampling of the museum even if you can't see the whole thing. Leave a Comment

by BlueBerry_7 The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, set in its historic home contains the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands. But the museum houses more than just paintings of Dutch masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer and many others, there are also superb collections of silver, delftware, doll’s houses, prints, and drawings. Dutch Masters: Willem Claesz Heda "still life" by davequ I loved the Rijksmuseum easily as much as any other museum in Europe. Why? The things the Dutch Master artists (Rembrandt, Vermeer, et all) did with "light" and the inspiring still lifes are beyond amazing (see Willem Claesz Heda (right) --->) Rijks is conveniently close to the Van Gogh museum and the beautiful Vondelpark, making it a wonderful 1, 2, or even 3-day excursion. Don't yawn, I could easily spend a few days in just this particular part of town and the pijp. Rijksmuseum has an outstanding web site in both Engels and Nederlands here: Rijkmuseum Enjoy, and be inspired. Work continues on the reconfiguration, but it still is a marvelous experience. When it is done, it will be even better. Leave a Comment

Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum by OlafS I've never been inside, and only have seen the outside of this big complex. But this is it, the famous place with the famous paintings. And there's more, the collection includes numerous historic artifacts and other stuff that may or may not interest you. There's also a garden, in which stands a building that was made of fragments of demolished old buildings, plus at least three old city gates. Responsible architect for the building and garden was, once again, P.J.H. Cuypers, whose plans for the interior will be partly reconstructed in the near future. It'll costs about 500 million euros! Well, they shouldn't have messed with it in the first place. As restoration will be under way for the next years parts of the complex will be closed. Rembrandt's Nightwatch has moved to a new, temporary place in the museum and can be seen there. I for one liked to look at the building itself. Leave a Comment

Named after the Dutch city of Delft where delftware was manufactured, origins can be traced to Mallorca in the 15th century where a porous type of pottery was glazed with bright metallic oxides. During the Renaissance these techniques were exported to Italy from where they spread north to Antwerp and then to the Netherlands, at the time called the United Provinces. Initially delft pottery designs featured landscapes, portraits and bible stories, the top end of the market was dominated by more ornate porcelain imported from China. When a prolonged civil war broke the supply line Delfts factories took over the luxury side of the market by copying Chinese designs. By the 1670's, blue and white tiles, plates, panels, jars and vases were being produced by the thousands and even exported to China where they undercut the Chinese producers. Unfortunately the Delft factories were themselves undercut from the 1760's by the British and the Germans until eventually production was shut down. Here in the Rijksmuseum in Room 5 is a large assortment of Delftware from plates and tiles, through to vases and flower holders dating from the late sixteenth century. Leave a Comment
