With major renovation taking place at the moment (July 2006) and continuing until 2008 the main museum building is closed, however, a special exhibition entitled Masterpieces is on display in the Philips Wing. This exhibition (containing over 400 exhibits, a fair amount for a lot of museums but hardly a scratch on the surface for the hundreds of thousands the Rijksmuseum contains) concentrates on the Golden Age of Dutch art - the 17th Century. Exhibits include the amazingly detailed Dolls House owned and commissioned by Petronella Oortman, which as well as representing a wonderful feat of artistry it is also a great historical record of life in a Dutch canal side house. There are pictures and artefacts illustrating Amsterdam and Holland's standing as a world trading power (a very good accompaniment to many of the exhibits in the Amsterdam Historisch Museum) and paintings by Frans Hals, Vermeer and, of course Rembrandt including the magnificent "Night Watch". Despite the fact that the galleries can get very busy, particularly at the weekend and around some of the more well know paintings, it is still wonderful. Entry: 10 euro plus 4 euro or an audio guide Opening Times: 9am-6pm daily The website (www.rijksmuseum.nl) is a fantastic site and well worth a look. Leave a Comment

Rijks Museum by Zlur The Rijks museum houses the largest collection of art and history in the Netherlands. The museum has an internationally renowned collection based around the paintings of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, the Golden Age, including twenty works by Rembrandt, four by Vermeer and numerous other paintings by artists such as Frans Hals and Jan Steen. Displayed at the very heart of the museum is Rembrandt’s Night Watch. But the museum houses more than just paintings: there are superb collections of silver, delftware, doll’s houses, prints, drawings, the mysterious Asiatic art and a recent completely renovated presentation on Dutch history. Works of art on paper, prints and drawings and since 1996 the photographic collection, are shown four times a year in different exhibitions. (Info taken from website mentioned) Leave a Comment

rijks museum at night by excitableone besides the fact that the building it's self is an amazing accomplishment this place was one of my favorite places we visited. i really enjoyed walking under the museum. while we were there they had some monks that were chantting under the museum on the sidewalk, the way it echoed was really breathtaking. don't go here if you only have an hour to spend, we spent a couple hours and had to rush at the end. Leave a Comment Directions: hard to miss, in the museumplein.

Rijksmuseum by Ewingjr98 The Rijksmuseum was founded in 1798, but the current location opened in 1885. Despite years of constant expansion and renovation, the Rijksmuseum will undergo the largest construction/renovation project in its history from 2003-2008. The museum contains over 7 million pieces, including the paintings of Dutch masters such as Rembrandt. The museum is open daily from 0900-1800, and tickets cost 9 Euros for adults while children get in for free. Leave a Comment

by heryanta Rijksmuseum (Royal Museum) in Amsterdam is in my humble opinion the most beautiful building in the city center. I was fortunate to be able to visit it a few times before it closed for renovations. The museum will be reopened in 2010 and until then the famous collections are to be wondered in one of the smaller wings in an exhibition called "The Masterpieces". Some of my favourite collections in the museum include the famous breathtaking "Nightwatch" painting by Rembrandt; the treasure from Dutch East Indies (nowadays Indonesia); and the Doll Houses. Museum is open daily from 9am to 6pm, on Fridays until 10pm. Tickets for adults age 18 and older cost Euro 10 and free otherwise. Even though the main building is closed - it is still a wonderful sight at night.

The Rijksmuseum is one of the top museums in the world. Currently in 2009, there is a major renovation ongoing so only the top 400 masterpieces are on exhibit. You get a taste of the greats, Hals, Vermeer, Rembrandt including the famed Night Watch and his exquisitely detailed portraits. You also get a view of the art and artifacts from the Dutch golden age in the 17th century and they are a sight to behold. You don't get a reduction though the whole museum isn't open but it's much more digestible this way and you can always go back again when it's reopened to see the rest. It's the kind of museum that you can spend most of the day in when it's fully operational. Currently there is no cafe but there are plenty nearby. There's a small gift shop on site and a larger one shared with the Van Gogh museum in the large square outside. We went earlish in the morning (in early May), arriving about 10 (it opens at 9). We didn't have a museum card for the fast lane but the queue wasn't too long. They xray your bags when you first go in and then you get your ticket. There is a lift for people with mobility problems. We were blown away by some of the items on display including the exquisite doll's house but the real stars were the paintings and portraits by Rembrandt. When you compare them next to the portraits by the other masters, even, you can see that his skill knocks the spots off the rest! There was a wonderful display of Delftware and ceramics. The scale model of the ship in the entrance hall was awesome and i really liked the Chinese gun rack as well. Even in it's abbreviated format, it's well worth seeing. Open from 9 to 6 every day, late opening to 10 on Fridays. You cannot take photos in the museum. Leave a Comment

In 1885 the Rijksmuseum designed by P.J.H. Cuypers was completed. It's one of the Dutch UNESCO heritage monuments. The collection has a longer history. The former Dutch Stadtholders started collecting the paintings which got a first home at the Huis ten Bosch in The Hague, called the Nationale Kunst-Galerij in 1800. In 1806 Lodewijk Napoleon became King of Holland and the galery was renamed into Koninklijk Museum. In 1808 the museum moved to Amsterdam where the collection joined the capital's art collection (with Rembrandt's Nightwatch), The new location was at the upper palace of the Royal Palace at the Dam square. During WWII most of the collection was moved to caves of the Sint Pietersberg at Maastricht. On the moment a 10 year renovation program is in progress. Opening hours: Rijksmuseum, De Meesterwerken; Admission: € 10,- Mo-Th: 9AM - 6PM Fr: 9AM - 8.30PM Sa-Su: 9AM - 6PM Hard Hat Tours (visiting the constructing site); Admission: € 15,- Must be booked at the Info center (there is a waiting list of about 3 months!)
