Well this museum was certainly different, and there were a great many things there that I had not seen before and it didn't seem anywhere as busy as other more well known museums in Amsterdam. Built on four floors around a vast atrium each level takes in an area of the Oriental world and other cultures outside Europe both tropical and sub-tropical.
There are many recreations of other times and places, a room in Egypt, a street in Indonesia etc all filled with the sights and sounds of the place. Highly reccomended.
The Tropenmuseum is one of the most fascinating anthropological museums in the Netherlands. A visit to the Tropen Museum is a journey through time and around the world. You get to know widely different cultures and get an excellent impression of everyday live in the tropics.
It was a funny visit! :-)
the Singelgracht to the Tropenmuseum.... Like I said before I am not a huge fan of museums... but this place was interesting... had a nice restaurant (The Ekeko - quite moderately priced) and shop selling nice (not tourist tacky) stuff. It wasn't overly busy. The focus in this place is the world's tropical and subtropical zones - and it really is quite interesting. 6.80E entry.
If you are at all interested in the Sheepvaarhuis or the Dutch East Indies Company, this museum is worth seeing.A huge collection of artifacts from the VOC's expeditions and colonies along with historical information and pieces...arranged by region.
One of my favourite museums in the world.
KIT is the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen (The Royal Tropical Institute). Included in the Amsterdam Pass there is also a visit to the Tropeum Museum, which by my impression is not as visited as the rest of Amsterdam's museums, but I urge you to visit because you cand find there some rather very interesting stuff.
Tropenmuseum is one of the most fascinating anthropological museums in Europe and certainly the nicest I've seen. A visit to Tropenmuseum is a journey trough time and arround the world. You get to know real cultures and get an excellent impressions of everyday life in the tropics.
What makes this museum so real is it's multimedia facilities (screens with movies and sounds) and most of all, the exact recreations of the places in time and place, like a typical bar in Mexic, a fabric factory in Indonesia, a street or a home somewhere in Asia or Africa. Entering the arranged space, with original objects and sounds, it's not hard to imagine and to travel back in time.
In the picture you can see the head of a colonial explorer in the amazonian jungle (I used to make this my member pic :) because it's a little bit scary).
It's a great museum if u'r into learning other cultures... u will see exhibits from different countries (they have different exhibitions from time to time)... what's interesting is the way they present it, which is by using different medias.... they show interesting objects n artefacts, lifelike models of stuff, small miniature, interactive programs, and so on
The Tropenmuseum is one of the largest anthropological museums in Europe and was finished in 1926. There are permanent exhibitions that are interesting also for children.
Their realistic reconstructions of local environments draw visitors right into the daily lives of the people of the tropics and subtropics, such as Java, noisy Arab streets, or the African savannah.
This is a most exciting and wonderful, also amazing place to visit.
You can see how adventurous scientists found their way to (once) far-off places.....what they had to do to stay healthy and sane, how they found their way through the jungles and other, for them, dangerous places.....
Visiting this museum makes you feel like you were a member of those EXPEDITIONS....
You can also see the results of their travels that often took months and months.....
