 | Amsterdam Tourist Traps | Tips 1 - 10 of 254 | | Curious to experience all Amsterdam had to offer, we headed to Casa Rosso, reputedly the best live sex show in Amsterdam (www.casarosso.com). The show took place in a small theatre style room. There were 7 "acts" to the show, though you could stay as long as you liked If you wanted to watch the same acts over again. There were 3 "novelty" acts and 4 "live sex" acts. The novelty acts involved props such as banana's and lit candles.... The live sex was not at all erotic - a little to choreographed....
....it was worth a look, but it wasn't cheap at approximately 25euros....even dearer if you wanted to have a drink while watching. Better to drink else where before and after the show
have your own private show back at your hotel ; ) Leave a Comment

The FAMOUS Red Light District....well, it's all true from what you've heard. The girls are out and ready for business.(remeber it's legal in Amsterdam)....There are all kind of women here from the ugly fat girl, to the drop dead gorgeous women.......the word here is CAREFUL !!!! don't travel by yourself into the RLD, watch out for pickpockets, and stay away from the drug dealers. Not for the young or families but a must see !!!!! OH and don't forget NO PICTURES !!!!! unless you want to end up in the hospital or in a canal !!!!!
As you reach the Red Light District people start to ask if you speak English, which is a very dumb question....ALL DUTCH people are taught English from a small age, so they speak English. Once you acknowledge one of these shady people they try to sell you Ecatasy, cocaine, heroin, the whole deal, they work in teams and might corner you and rob you....just IGNORE THEM !!!! walk right past them and don't make eye contact Leave a Comment

What a choice! Could you go in and NOT buy some? I couldn't! I think this shop was called Puccini, but not sure now - it was tucked away in a backstreet alongside a canal somewhere! Ok, I have to be honest here - they did actually look better than they tasted - but the choosing bit from the amazing display and the aroma inside the shop was very good!! And don't expect much change from a few Euros for just a couple of chocs either!
Don't let your eyes get bigger than your belly - just buy a couple - they are larger than usual chocs too!!
These are a nice choccy fix if nothing else is around - but don't expect them to compare with Belgian chocs!! Leave a Comment

There are quite a few of the Bulldog Coffee Shop chain in Amsterdam. They are all overpriced and over commercialised. The bright trendy signs might pull in the naive uninformed tourists but they really aren't worth the money at all. Expensive and inferior quality cannabis is sold here as well as drinks at inflated prices. Also, the decor inside is nothing special. Quite dingy and unappealing. Much better to check out www.channels.nl for some great advice on the best coffee shops to go to. Please note that there is a Bulldog which is more orientated to alcohol and it is loud and brash. The drinks are still overpriced but the decor is much better. More like a loud bar/nightclub. It plays annoying dance music though. Not what I like to hear at the best of times, never mind in a chilled out place such as Amsterdam.
Buy your cannabis elsewhere and use it there. Stay for no more than one drink, then leave and go somewhere decent.
Apart from trying www.channels.nl for an extensive list, the ones I can immediately recommend from first hand experience are De Kuil, Grey Area, The Other Place, Greenhouse Effect, Baba's and Betty Boop's. There are many more though and generally the standard is pretty good. Leave a Comment

It has been on the news a lot lately that romanian and bulgarian criminals have been playing tricks on tourists. They tell you they exchange your money and then they steal it from you.... so never trust anybody and only exchange your money at GWK on the trainstations or in the centre. This happens mainly on Damrak, the street between Central Station and Damsquare. There are also some romanians and bulgarians who dress up as police officers and tell you lies to get your money or personal belongings. So BEWARE of these horrible people. Always watch your bags in the trams, busses and trains, there are pickpockets.
Call the police immediately. Our emergency numer is 112 and if its not an emergency but still something happened and you need the police call 0900-8844.
Exchange money at the banks, trainstation, airport or GWK Leave a Comment

If you are looking for a nice place to eat or to buy souvenirs, Damrak may be one of your first adresses. Anyway, most prices are expensive. And don't even think to buy a soft drink at one of the souvenir shops. You can pay for a can 2 € or even more.
Try Leidsestraat and Leidesplein, there are also souvenir shops and cafés and the prices are less expensive. There's also an Albert Heijn supermarket where you can buy your drinks and groceries. A nice area for cafés is also Prinsengracht near Westerkerk. You can find even better and cheaper restaurants at the Jordaan district. Leave a Comment

Across the main road from this canal are souvenier shops, pseudo-museums, department stores, and all sorts of places that can suck up your time and your money. Now don't get me wrong, I had fun wandering this area and even going into some of these 'museums' (like the sex and torture museum) ... but if you are limited in time and funds ... take a picture and walk away! Otherwise, plan a few hours to wander about and explore ... you'll even find a McDonalds if you can's bring yourself to eat somewhere else :) This is essentially the region you see when you leave Centraal Station ... lots of hostels, hotels, shops, and restaurants .... easy to navigate despite being full of little tiny side streets - they all seem to lead back to the same place :) The main Canal! When you hit Dam in search of a coffeeshop you may be fooled into thinking the big coffeeshop off of DamRak is a good idea. Don't do it! Yes, the Grasshopper is well known, but for all the wrong reasons. Never has there been a bigger tourist trap. Expensive and poor quality for your money. Do yourself a favour and hunt out a different coffeeshop.
Steal a beermat!
De Rockerij. Take a tram or walk to the Leidsepleain, and just up the side road where McDonalds is you'll find this haven. Great interior, lots of happy people! Leave a Comment

You can throw things if you want, but I think the canal cruises you get by Centraal station are a disappointment. Especially the ones on closed boats where you sit crammed in with 30 other tourists, staring out the windows of the low cabin, straining your neck to look up at the bridges.
Just don't do the above.... it's a boring ripoff. Here on the other hand, is a great place to get a small boat where you can sit topside, eat, drink, smoke, and enjoy & see the canals of Amsterdam as the should be seen: Saint Nicolaas Boat Club you cav sign up for Saint Nicolaas Boat tours at Boom Chicago only
Be picky. Find a small, more open cruise boat where you sit topside in the open. Better yet, rent a small boat for yourself and cruise where you want to go. Leave a Comment

Not too much of a trap I guess, but it could be embarrassing.... If you are looking for "coke" (as I call a glass of Coca Cola), then specify this, by asking for a "glass of coke", or "a coca cola", or whatever. Not a big deal as such, but you may not get such a nice reception if the staff think that you are in looking for hard drugs. If you are any bit nervous, this may throw you off... Just a tip, you dont need to set this in stone (pardon the pun) Leave a Comment
