My wife is standing in front of the 'Prostitution Information Center'. It was closed the 3 times (in 2 days) we stopped by. If you're too bashful or prudish to just roam the area yourself, I guess this place may be worth a stop - if it's open when you get there!
This is just across from the Oude Kerke, the oldest church in A'dam (notice the red lights to the left, these are all around this church).
The Red Light District is FULL of tourists at night but it does have to be seen to be believed. I've never seen anything like it, its not just girls on the street corner in their short skirts and fishnets! I would advise anyone to at least have a quick walk along one of the main canals - even my mum wanted to see it when we went. She didn't want to say she had been to Amsterdam but not seen the most famous thing there!
The Red Light District. And the coffeeshops. Look, I understand that tourists go to Amsterdam for sex and drugs. Note that sentence. It's the tourists, not the locals. If you wander through the Red Light District (which I do recommend as it is very attractive), you'll be walking with tourists from England, America, and Australia looking at girls from Russia, Ukraine, and Africa. There are no Dutchpeople anywhere. Ditto for the hash bars, like the one pictured below. Nothing but Aussies, Brits, and Yanks. To experience Dutch culture, stick to a pint of Heineken at a brown cafe.
In the street you can find some red light theatre that promise you live shows. Take care: some of they are too cheap to see live shows!!!
