Amsterdam police is warning not to play a game called 'balletje balletje'. It is played on the streets in (mostly) the red light district and you will never win it.
Another tourist trap is buying drugs on the streets. Never do it: it can be dangerous and it's illegal. There are 100-odd legal coffeeshops in AMS to provide you with your softdrugs and smart shops were you can get mushrooms etcetera.
Maybe it is a tourist trap, but I like it a lot, the street artist. This a picture I took of a street artists in Amsterdam. I think the street artists give a great atmosphere to this town. Looking at this picture just brings back the memories of my visit to Amsterdam last year.
This is the Amsterdam I like, strolling around in one of the great neighbourhoods of Amsterdam, along one of the canals, looking at the great architecture of the buildings and just taking in the atmosphere. And these street artist sure add to that feeling.
It seems that many tourists worry about Amsterdam´s liberal atmosphere: drug addicts, thiefs and prostutes, all aiming at their money.
Unique Suggestions: Of course, there is crime in Amsterdam. But in fact, the dutch drugs policy has been proven many times to be very effective. And every big city has a red light district! If you use your common sense and do not wave around with your brand new expensive camera, you´ll be fine!
Fun Alternatives: Still do not feel safe, come to Leiden, a "little Amsterdam"!
Watch out when you are standing in a crowd watching at a streetartist. Pickpockets often rob people while watching artists.
One thing you should do in Amsterdam is look around you, you'll be surprised by what you see. It's great fun looking at all the different characters on the street.
