Avoid P&R Bos and Lommer at all costs!
Our car was broken into at this parking lot, despite no valuables being visible in the car (the only valuable, a GPS in the glove compartiment, was stolen). On the same night more than 5 other cars were broken into; the floor was covered in broken glass.
They actually have an industrial vacuum cleaner to suck up the broken car glass because it happens so often there. The police office nearby confirmed that they have multiple break in reports daily from this parking lot. Do note that despite the tv-screens and security cameras which may lead you to believe the parking is (partially) guarded, it is not at all guarded. Also, there are multiple cameras on the top level, but not a single one on the bottom level; your car is almost guaranteed to be burgled if it is on the bottom level overnight.
Do not use this parking lot!
Amsterdam has a number of Park & Ride (P&R)-locations.
The parking garage in the basement of the Olympic stadion is a little unknown, but might be the best around.
For Euro 8.00 you can park your car and get 2 free day-return tickets at the garage office.
With tram 16 or 24 it's just a 15 minute ride to center city.
This garage is very well lit and woman friendly.
Toilets are free at the booth.
Exit S108 from the A10 ring South side; follow the P&R signs.
2010 update: The parking has been privatised and the number of P&R parking spot is limited and only available if you take the most right entrance lane to the garage. P&R Parking availability can be a problem in the weekends.
Other P&R garages are:
Zeeburg-1 and Zeeburg-2
Arena
Sloterdijk
Newer P&R locations are:
Bos en Lommer
World Fashion Center
Gaasperplas

It's almost impossible to park your car in the Amsterdam center streets. If you are lucky to find a spot, you discover the price is high and you need a lot of Euro coins (or Chipknip, if you have one available with enough electronic money on it).
An alternative is to park your car at the ARENA PARK and RIDE and use the free public transport by sybway (metro) to the city center. 24 hour parking costs EURO 8.00.
The Arena P&R is not available during an ARENA event like a soccer match or concert.

There is a beautiful review on the advantages of parking your car out of Amsterdam The review is dated April 2011 but since inflation is caused first by governments and other administrations, the tariffs mentioned have gone up. A day parking is €8 instead of €5, the hour rate is 2.2 instead of 1.9 etc. still payable in comparison to street parking in the city where the tariff has gone up to €5/hr/24h/7days ! There you go, want to spent some money in the city and they literally suck it out of your wallet at arrival. So beware and park in the Transferium Arena Garage and get also 2 free metro or other public transport tickets to the city. John.
on the side you can pick a garage.
P & R are in my opion the cheapest especialy with the public transport card.

centre parking but very expensive
Bijenkorf
Nieuwezijds kolk
museumplein
also often long waiting lines especialy from 12.00.
sunday some free parking but outside centre. sorry dont know the areas as i dont have a car.
some free parking in sloten, buitenveldert and amstelveen. if you try this ask first.
Fantastic idea this,it encourages both commuters and tourists to park outsdie the city and tram it in.It only cost me 5.50 Euros to park here for 8 hours and I got 2 free return train tickets into the city. Many cities could learn from this example .
Going by car into the centre of Amsterdam and try to find a parkingspot is the idea of a lunatic. If your not knowing about some secret spot, don;t even bother. The transferium is in this case a lot more easy and also cheaper (unless you want to keep on running to the car refilling the parkingmeter). The transferium is situated in the Arena (the Ajax football stadium). So check out if there are any games at the moment of arrival. If not then follow the P+R-signs that say "Transferium" and from here a minibus will bring you to the nearest metro-station. Tickets for public transport are all included in the parkingfee and you can park as long as you want.
