There are luggage lockers in several sizes. You can book one locker UP UNTIL 36 hours but no more! It is 4.90 Euros for the first 24 hours and 7.00 Euros x 2 for the remaining 2 days. If you cannot come back after day one then the machine will calculate automatically the next day (or two). I was a bit uninformed (and paranoid) so I came back within the 1st 24 hour period and re-booked another 24 hour period at the 4.90 rate. Refer to the time entered on your ticket and make absolutetly sure to return before your time expires otherwise (remember it is a max of 36 hours!!) otherwise there are additional fees and aggravation. The lockers are accessible 24 hours, however. This is information that I verified with the very helpful baggage agent (who is there only during specified times). My Mastercard debit card (which does not have a smart chip) worked without a problem (you can only pay with plastic).

I was surprised that NL Railways only accepts cash or a smart-chip based credit card at their ticket windows (unlike Belgian Rail)! There is a Travelex currency exchange next door (offering lousy rates) in a pinch. ***Make sure to buy tickets in advance because the lines to purchase can be very lengthy and frustrating.

This is the main railway station where all the international trains arrive and depart. It was built in 1889 in Neo-Renaissance style on an artificial island, supported by more than 10,000 tree trunks that were rammed into the sandy ground.
Second photo: In the Central Station, track 8b.
Third photo: GVB is the public transport company of Amsterdam. They have a very well organized ticket and information office right in front of the central station. Take a number when you go in, and before you've had a chance to look around your number will flash on a screen and tell you which counter to go to. (Well, it might take a bit longer when a major international train has just arrived, but you get the idea.)

Amsterdam's Centraal Station - busy, bustling and hectic during the day... and much the same at night! You can get trains here to other cities within the Netherlands and the ICE train to other European countries. The staff here are (in my experience) very helpful and patient with non-Dutch travellers! The queues at the ticket offices are long and the ticket machines don't accept paper money so be prepared!
The website has more info in English.

Having only travelled to Amsterdam by plane and coach - I have never actually arrived at Centraal Station. It has regular connections with key cities in Germany, Belgium and France as well as larger towns and cities in other parts of the Netherlands. Just outside the station are the trams #4, #9, #16 #20, #24, #25., as well as buses and taxis.
The photo was taken at dusk - from PrinsHendrikkaade.

I am not sure if this is a warning but its about transportation so I will but it here. The Centraal Station in Amsterdam doesnt take credit cards or debit cards from the US. They only accept cards from the Netherlands. I dont remember if it was like this the last time I came but it was somewhat of an inconvenience for me. There are ATMS there in the station so you will have to get money out first then get your tickets.

The Amsterdam Central Station was the first Dutch Station designed by an architect. In 1876 P.J.H. Cuypers started the design with the aid of A.L. van Gendt. From 1882 till 1889 the 306 by 30 meter building was constructed.
The most used train connection is the one from the

I just wanted to share an experience I had which I think would be useful for others to know of. I booked online from my hotel with Vizivo Car Hire at the new Amsterdam Central Station location and picked the car up 20 minutes later. I didn't think these online car hire rental companies could do that. I used http://www.vizivo.com. They emailed the voucher and off I went, pretty cool.
