Central Station & Trains, Amsterdam
Trains frequently link the airport to the city and they will have you at Centraal Station in minutes. Once at Centraal Station, you can go just about anywhere in the country on a train. You do not need to rent a car here. In Amsterdam, trams can bring you further into the city from the train station. Day trips are very easy to make in the Netherlands from this transportation hub. Haarlem is only 15 minutes away (see the Haarlem section). However, there are many choices one can make for a day trip.
Every big city in Europe has a Central Station and Amsterdam is no exception (where else would you go to catch your train). If you take the train from the airport or from elsewhere or if you plan to leave Amsterdam by train you will have to pass through Central Station. This can be a pretty busy place during the day and even some times at night with people coming and going. The front of Central Station is also the hub for the street cars that scatter throughout Amsterdam. It is best to be careful when you are in or around Central Station as pickpockets are notorious. Keep a close eye and a good grip on your valuables and you'll have no problem. You'll also find a VVV right across from Central Station where you can book hotels and other travel related stuff.
