Taxi to & from Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam
From Amsterdam to Schiphol it is better to book a taxi in advance. There are numerous taxi services that offer attractive fixed price transfers. Most hotels will also have arrangements with taxi companies to offer fixed-fare transport to the airport. Expect to pay around 50 to 60 euro for a trip from the city center. This service will cost you more then arranging your own taxi. At the airport it is also possible to book a last minute taxi with www.DeluxeTaxiAmsterdam.com +31648603332. They offer high service against regular prices.
With the independent taxis that's not the case. Most are reputable, but perhaps 25% aren't. There are locations in the city where you'll find it difficult to get a taxi - notably Central Station and Leidseplein - where there are long rows of independent taxis that have been known to show problems (refusing short trips, wanting to ride with the meter off (never let that happen!), refusing a blind passenger with a guide dog...) Taxis in Amsterdam are pretty expensive so it is recommended to only give a small tip, if at all - really it is a bonus for a good, friendly driver, not just something that has to be given. If you wan' to avoid all of this hustle then pre-book your taxi at there website(www.DeluxeTaxiAmsterdam.com), or call for a last minute taxi +31648603332.
Taxi's in Amsterdam are known that there one of the worst of Europe. It already starts when you arrive at the Airport. People offering you taxi fares, without having the local permits. I have been living in Amsterdam now for more then 10 years and have been using the services of DeluxeTaxiAmsterdam.com they offer very high services against regular taxi fares also know as limo service. I really would recommend using these guys because the driver is experienced and always speaks english. Try to avoid taking a taxi from the street as much as you can, book your taxi's in advance as much as you can, or call one last minute +31 6 4860 333 2. They pick you up from inside the Airport very help full so you don't need to hustle around the airport to find out where you need to go. A company that offers such a high service between all of those ignorant drivers deserve the credit specially in a city like Amsterdam!
We were surprised that a taxi driver sought us out in the terminal. He put the jump on his fellow taxi drivers who were waiting patiently in line at the taxi stand for passengers. He wanted to charge us 50 euro for transport to our hotel in Amsterdam (near the Red Light District). We negoiated and he accepted 40 euro (tip included).
Taxi's in and around Amsterdam can be real expensive. Do as I do (and more locals) book a taxi in advance and it save's you a lot of money. Have good experience with the guys from IJburg. IJburg is the new neighborhood of Amsterdam.
I have had different experiences with taxis, good and bad. Some drivers are very friendly and helpful, but a lot of them are highway men in disguise. Especially tourist or women travelling alone are subject to very high fare prices or harassment. You are best to book with a reputable company. Also a good tip is to make note of the license plate of the taxi if you feel you have been overcharged or intimidated.
I have had very good experiences with an Amsterdam taxi company called Ambassador Taxi Services. They pick me up from the airport or take me to it when I need to travel abroad. They give me an excellent service at a good rate. I would recommend them to any traveller going to Holland.
We booked the taxi online through Schiphol airport web pages.
When you arrive you go to the STS desk located in the main hall. We had to wait a bit for a taxi as they were busy but on the return from our hotel they were punctual.
The price for the return journey was 67 euros not cheap but if you don't want to catch the train or use the Connexion service at the same desk I would say this the best way to your hotel.
Taking the Taxi? Hahaha ok, I tried it once (costs of the company) but don't feel like doing it again.
Why not? From the Dam square to Schiphol (call for Schiphol Plaza if your are going to the airport) it will cost you around €50,-. It's not faster than taking the train (especially if you need to be picked-up at the door).
But if you are somewhere stuck from public transport or need to travel at nightly hours you might be better of by taking a cab. Ask your hotel for deals. From the airport there are simple rules, only accept rides at the taxistand. DO NOT take offers from people who offer you a ride in the terminal or just outside the doors, these are private companies usually charging you twice or tripple the amount you would be paying for a normal taxi, and don't expect better service. The normal taxicompanies (TCA / Taxi Direct) are trusthworthy and usually do not rip you off.
Since i missed my train and next train would be too close to flight departure, we decided to take a taxi to airport. Although is a comfortable and quick option (as long as there is not traffic) it can also prove to be expensive. A taxi from Centraal Station to Schilphol Airport costs around 40euros.
