    Take a ride

by blusky Updated Nov 17, 2005

In case of long layover at Schiphol the best thing you can do is to take the train and go directly to the center to take a boat cruise over canals or to just take a walk.
The train will take you to the central station and then all options are open.
Drives from Schiphol to the city centre takes something between 10-15 minutes.

    Amsterdam Airport To City Centre

    by Meadows11 Written Mar 9, 2005

We hadn't been aware how far out of the main city the airport actually was until we arrived. Fortunately you can get a reasonably priced train ticket at the airport in to the city. The train station is located within the airport and takes you right in to the heart of Amsterdam. If I remember correctly, the journey took 30-45 minutes. The ticket booths are easily located in the airport, and don't be afraid to ask questions- all the people we encountered there were very friendly and helpful.

If your hotel is near central station and if you are coming from the airport, definitly the train is the better way. You have a train every 15 minutes. Pay always attention in the respective stoppings.

    From airport to downtown...

    by mucky-marc Written Sep 17, 2004

Much as there are English instructions on the ticketing machines. But some of the tabs (the ones where you press to choose your destinations or even if it is a single or return trip - correct me if I'm wrong) are labelled in Dutch. So do ask around if you are not sure and buy the wrong ticket in the end... Tickets can be rather expensive...

    Train NS(Amsterdam centraal station)
There is a regular train service from the airport Schiphol to the central station in the centre of the city of Amsterdam.
Public transport : buy a 'strippenkaart' to cut transportation costs.
Better still : Buy/rent a bike. Amsterdam is a city of bikes. Cyclists rule the traffic!!

Fly! Easyjet has very cheap flights from Liverpool, London Luton and Belfast in the UK.
Rail! From anywhere else in Europe... Amsterdam has very good rail connections to EVERYWHERE!
Take the trams - jump on and off - but ask a local to show you how to stamp your strippenkarten! Buyt the strippenkart from the transport office outside Centraal Railway station

The train is very comfortable and clean

From Schiphol airport, catch the train to Centraal Station, Amsterdam. The train is very comfortable and clean, and it's faster than driving. The ticket office is on the main floor of the airport. The clerks speak perfect English. The fare is 3.10 Euro per person.

The public transport system to/from the airport seems to be extremely well arranged with the train station being very central within the airport and the prices very reasonable. We paid € 5.50 each for a weekend return ticket, Schiphol to Centraal Station. The journey takes about 15 minutes and the trains are fast and were never that full. A train journey means that you are able to see a little bit of the countryside before arriving at Centraal Station.

Taking the train from the city to the airport is fun, especially if you ride on the stairs, instead of in a seat : )

Flew from London to Schiphol Airport, from there we got a train to the city centre. Outside the train station we got a tram to Vondel Park

    On the train

In my opinion, train is the most convenient and fast way to get from and to the airport. Sadly, our time was up and needed to go back and catch our flight.
