Flying is the best way to get to Amsterdam. Following arrival at Schipol, take the train to Central Station.
Get your ticket from the ticket office before going down to the platform.
The train goes every 10 minutes from platform 3 and is a fast train with no stops. There are trains from other platforms but 3 is best.
All trains bring you to the CS, which is in the centre of Amsterdam.
The public transport system to/from the airport seems to be extremely well arranged with the train station being very central within the airport and the prices very reasonable. We paid € 5.50 each for a weekend return ticket, Schiphol to Centraal Station. The journey takes about 15 minutes and the trains are fast and were never that full. A train journey means that you are able to see a little bit of the countryside before arriving at Centraal Station.
From Schiphol airport, catch the train to Centraal Station, Amsterdam. The train is very comfortable and clean, and it's faster than driving. The ticket office is on the main floor of the airport. The clerks speak perfect English. The fare is 3.10 Euro per person.
Schiphol Airport is one of the busiest in Europe, and I would have to say the most efficient airport I've been to (others more knowledgable than me agree), from Schiphol it's a short and convenient train ride to A'dam Centraal Station.
If you're already in Europe or the UK, trains are a viable alternative also. Being one of the busiest ports in Europe, both ocean going and river cruise ships call on A'dam. For those on a tight budget, buses can be an economical way to get to A'dam
If you absolutely must, you can get to A'dam by car. I would strongly suggest parking it once you get there though
Any discussion of driving (and more importantly, parking!) in A'dam should more properly go under the WARNINGS OR DANGERS heading.
I travelled to Amsterdam from Luton airport with Easyjet airlines. Landed at Schiphol and the took the train into Amsterdam Central railway station. Nice and simple.
Catching the train from Schipol to Amsterdam Centraal is as easy as pie. The cost currently is 7.50 Euro for the return ticket.
Taking the train from the city to the airport is fun, especially if you ride on the stairs, instead of in a seat : )
In my opinion, train is the most convenient and fast way to get from and to the airport. Sadly, our time was up and needed to go back and catch our flight.
