  • Credit card problems in Netherlands

by Knyv Written Oct 31, 2011

I purchased a Travelex chip and pin debit card to use at Dutch Rail stations, as I was warned their ticket machines will not accept "swipe" type cards. The Dutch rail system, supermarkets, and many other places in Holland will not accept any chip and pin card except their own Dutch bank debit cards. Worse, the Dutch Rail ticket machines only take Euro coins, no bills. Calls to Travelex were of absolutely no help. We were staying in a small town with no manned ticket booth, so we were forced to carry a weighty amount of 2 Euro coins.

always keep train tickets with you there are frequent ticket checkings in the train.

credit card is a must ,there are railway stations were ticket booths accept only card and phone booths do not accept coins.
