There are people who do heroin in Amsterdam even though I was told by a local it's not as bad as it used to be, There are places where they congregate and do their dealing but these places can be avoided. and there seems to be a strong police presence in these areas, but I would stay clear after dark even though it seems safe during the day.
Watch out! more than once I had people trying to put baggies or E tabs in my hand. One time a guy followed me to the suppermarket for almost a mile at 7am. He just couldn't belive that an American came to Amsterdam for more than just drugs...... They have great beer as well.
While walking around the area where our hotel was and in the Dam Square area, we were approached several times by drug dealers. We either said 'no' or just ignored them and they were not a problem. I have heard that if you acknowledge them, they will not leave you alone so it is best just to ignore them.
Will that be oregano, powder sugar or aspirin?
Amsterdam's a place where almost anything goes and it endures a lot of narcotourists. If you do come over chances are that someone on the street will try and sell you whatever mind altering substance you may be inclined to buy. Word from the wise: the stuff you buy on the street is generally nothing more than repackaged supermarket goods.
I can honestly say I have never seen somebody shooting up until I went to Amsterdam, but especially shooting up in the middle of the street! I thought that was crazy! Beware of shady people who come up to you and whisper 'weed' 'cocaine' 'X' 'Heroin' or anything like that. Just ignore them, that's what we did. And if you did do drugs, they would probably be selling you Ajax or something harmful to you...thats all. This is a picture of a junky shooting up..err i mean Dale next to a 'car'
I was a young woman alone, and was slightly intimidated by the hard core drug dealers on every corner. I was harrased and followed. I have also heard some horror stories of drugs purchased, namely X but that applies everywhere, I guess.
Just don't buy ANY drugs of the street. There are more then enough good coffeshops around town. If you are from a big city like L.A., San Francisco or New York you have no reason to be scared down here...
Just say to watch out for the guys on the street corner in the center of town trying to sell you drugs. If your not into looking at the red light district, try not to walk around the town center to much.
beware of drug dealers and shady characters, especially in the red light district. The best advice I was given is to keep your valuables safe, dont walk on your own too much and answer 'nay' if someone approaches or offers you anything.
bad drugs on the street!! me and my mate were watching postcards in the middle of a sunny day when this guy comes and asks if we want to buy heroin. and in general, there´s always someone asking if you want something, speed, extacy etc...they even asked my dad and he´s 50.
