The Water Tower is an eye catching construction in the heart of town.
It was build in 1908 from the design of architect Jan Schotel.
The tower is 40 meters high and holds 400 m³ water.
In the early sixties the tower was reconstructed to make the water tank bigger. The outside was re-enforced with concrete.
In the eighties the tower was de-commissioned and for some time there was a café at the ground floor.
In 2005 the building was brought back to its original design and is in use for climbing practice.
At the Beatrixstraat close to the station the Jutter statue is located. It's made by sculptor and artist Kees Doolaard, born at Rotterdam, but a Den Helder inhabitant for most of his life.
The statue was unveiled at January 4,1995 as a gift of the city shopkeepers to the people of Den Helder.

Favorite thing: A window of a souvenir shop in Bergen. Bergen is a little village where many artists and the rich live. It has narrow streets and a lovely ruine church.
Den Helder is a harbor were marine ships from all over the world come. So when you walk through the centre of the village you can see sailors doing their shopping. If I heard it right, this were Russian??? Some rather goodlooking chaps btw :-)!
Fondest memory: One day I hope to sit in one of the pubs where sailors go. As someone told me, many sailors like to sing and make music and bring their own music instruments.Scottish pipes, Russian singers, I just love to be there one day!
If you are looking for an Internat Cafe, Internet Plaza is the place to go to.
You find it at Breewaterstraat 12 or http://www.computerplaza.nl/internetplaza/.
Fondest memory: This sign on the Church opposite "De Oude Rijkswerf" with a famous line from a poem by Piet Paaltjens.
Favorite thing: The statue of the beach comber of Den Helder.
Favorite thing: You can compare De Rijp with small places like Zaandam /De Zaanse Schans / Marken or Volendam. You can find authentic green small houses here and only can enter the small towns on foor or by bike.
